Descendants of Mohd Hussain Khayyat

Before you continue to read, please be informed that girls of Arabic descent have Siti in their names when they are unmarried. However, when these girls get married, their Siti names are automatically changed to Umi names. Thus, Siti A becomes Umi A. Similarly, they are called Siti before marriage, and Umi after marriage. That is Arab name and tradition.

From Siti Salamah bt Sheikh Mohammed, Sharifah Alwiah bt Syed Sahil and Sharifah Mariam bt Syed Alwi:

Mohd Hussain Khayyat had 2 daughters, Siti Noor and Siti Rogayah.

Siti Rogayah bt Mohd Hussain Khayyat married to Wan Teh. They have 2 children, Siti Kalsom and Mohd Salleh.

Siti Noor bt Mohd Hussain Khayyat married to Syed Alwi. They have 2 children, Sharifah Mariam bt Syed Alwi (Prof Syed Mohsin's mother) and Syed Mohamad.

Sharifah Mariam bt Syed Alwi married to Syed Sahil Jamalullail. They have 8 children, 4 sons and 4 daughters:
  1. Syed Omar Syed Sahil
  2. Sharifah Zahrah Syed Sahil
  3. Syed Mohsin Syed Sahil (deceased)
  4. Sharifah Sakinah  Syed Sahil

Ami Aziz Al-Yamani's elder sister is Siti Fatimah bt Shaik Mohamad bin Salem Al-Yamani @ Pahmah. She was popularly known only as Pahmah. Nobody knew her real name in Melaka. When she gave birth to her first and only son, she was registered only by her nickname, i.e., Pahmah.

Pahma married (c.1895) to Mohd Sharif bin Ismail of Banda Hilir, Melaka. Their only son is Mohamed Usuf @ Mohd Yusope bin Hj Mohd Sharif bin Ismail Al-Yamani (1896-1954). They have 4 daughters.

Mohd Yusope was born at home in Melaka on 11 February 1896 while his father was away on the Hajj pilgrimage (bapanya pergi mengerjakan ibadah Haji). The father's youngest brother, Zainal Abidin bin Ismail Alyamani, registered his nephew's birth.

Mohd Yusope (Walid) was Bapak's father, and my paternal grandfather.

Descendants of Pahmah & Ami Aziz Alyamani

From Siti Salamah, Sharifah Alwiah Syed Sahil and Sharifah Mariam bt Syed Alwi (7 Nov 2011)

The link between the Malacca Arabs and the Penang Arabs is via Ami Aziz Alyamani. Ami Aziz Alyamani was the younger brother of Pahmah. Ami Aziz Alyamani was a man of small stature in old age. However, Tok Kalthom (Batu Uban) said Ami Aziz Alyamani had a big build.
There were 2 men named Aziz in Jelutong, Penang. Ami Aziz Alyamani was of small build. The other man, Aziz Ibrahim, was a man of big frame. He was a politician. His biodata is in the Penang Free School magazine.
I'm referring to Ami Aziz Alyamani, the man of small stature, who had once owned the European car business in Jalan Anson, Penang, and who married two wives - 1. Siti Rahmah bt Abdul Rashid Makawi and 2. Aishah bt Abdullah (Nek Jepun).

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

From Bapak

Bapak never mentioned the full name of Pahmah and Ami Aziz Alyamani or their father. I therefore asked Shaik Abdul Aziz Al-Khaiyath - the son of Tok Kalthom in Kg Batu Uban, Penang.

Bapak had told me that Pahmah (Siti Fatimah bt Sheikh Mohamad bin Salem Alyamani) was fair like a Chinese (putih macam Cina). Pahmah could be a Nyonya. Pahmah's younger brother was Abdul Aziz bin Sheikh Mohamad (Ami Aziz Al-Yamani).

From me

Tok Moyang Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail married Nenek Moyang Pahmah @ Siti Fatimah bt Sheikh Mohamad bin Salem Alyamani, and they had 5 children, a son and 4 daughters.
  1. Mohd Yusope @ Walid (Bapak's father) - Mohd Yusope was my paternal grandfather
  2. Amnah - married to Haji Ahmad bin Haji Abdul Latiff (HABHAL) in Singapore (pengusaha kicap HABHAL selepas perang)
  3. Mahani @ Nek Ani - guru Quran (never married)
  4. Asiah @ Nek Ya - married Haji Ibrahim, a mamak businessman in Tampin. She also taught Quran with Nek Ani.
  5. Alijah @ Nek Jah  - never married
Tok Moyang Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail died early (at age around 38). His wife also died with him.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

From Abang Sharif (25 April 2012)

When Tok Moyang Hj Mohd Sharif died, Tok Moyang Zainal took Tok Yusope and Nek Jah (actual name is Khalijah/Halijah) under his arm whilst Tok Moyang Nordin took care of Mahani, Amnah & Asiah.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

From me (28 April 2012)

When Tok Moyang Haji Mohd Sharif died, his 2 younger brothers took care of his children. Tok Moyang Zainal Abidin (the youngest of 3 brothers) cared for Tok Yusope (Walid) and Nenek Alijah (Nek Jah) while Tok Moyang Haji Nordin (middle brother) cared for the 3 older girls - Nenek Amnah, Nenek Mahani (Nek Ani) and Nenek Asiah (Nek Ya).

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

From Bapak

Mohd Yusope bin Haji Mohd Sharif (Walid) married Aishah bt Mohd Amin (Nek Inchek of Kg Baru, KL). They had 15 children. Names of their children are (as ordered by Bapak):
  1. Ainon (Mak Ainon)
  2. Zainah (Makcik Nah, Che Nah)
  3. Sarah (Mak Sarah)
  4. Jami'ah (Mak Nya) @ Rahmah
  5. Ramlah (Mak Lah)
  6. Abu Bakar (Pak Baka, Pak Bakau, Pak Kau)
  7. Abdul Rashid (Bapak, my father)
  8. Jaafar (Pakcik Pau, Pak Pau)
  9. Safura (Bik Wa)
  10. Che Bedah (Mak Bedah, Bedah)
  11. Baharudin (Badin, Pak Din)
  12. Saleh (Pak Saleh)
  13. Che Sekma (Mak Sekma)

  15. Shamsul'ain (died as infant)

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

From me

Abdul Aziz bin Sheikh Mohamad (Ami Aziz Al-Yamani) married and lived in Penang, in a small Malay wooden house by the sea at Jelutong Beach.

However, there was another place I met Ami Aziz Alyamani, during Hari Raya Aidilfitri - at an endmost white shophouse where Nek Jepun lived. It was a shophouse by a big tree, before he lived at the yellow house at Hutton Lane.

Did Ami Aziz marry 2 ladies? Yes, he married Nek Jepun later, but did not have any children with her. She had previously married a policeman. They adopted a Chinese girl as their daughter (Mazlifah Aziz). Both Nek Jepun and her adopted daughter often returned to Tokyo, Japan.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

From Tok Chu in Air Itam, Penang (27 May 2012)

The British gave Ami Aziz Alyamani a European car business and also a house. This house is a big yellow double-storey bungalow behind Masjid Jalan Hutton (there is a small road at the side of the mosque that leads to his house). The road was formerly Hutton Lane.

Tok Chu is Mohd Nor Merican, the father of Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Murad Merican.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

From me

Ami Aziz Alyamani's brick house was a bright yellow building. The lane is very narrow. There was a car parked in the shed adjacent to the big house. Masjid Jalan Hutton blocks the streetview of his house.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

From The Early Malay Doctors
- Biography of Dr SM Baboo

Both Mr Abdul Aziz Ibrahim and Dr SM Baboo were involved in politics in Penang.

The Singapore Free Press on 5 December 1952 reported that Dr SM Baboo (UMNO-Muslim) and Mr Aziz Ibrahim (Radical) were defeated in 1951. Dr Baboo was a private medical practitioner who represented Kelawei Ward. Mr Aziz Ibrahim was a publisher and represented Jelutong.[1]

Mr Aziz Ibrahim's wife was also in politics but she also lost in the 1951 elections.

Jaafar bin Mohd Yusope

Full name: Jaafar bin Mohd Yusope
Call name: I called him Pak Cik Pau. Nonie called him Pak Pau.
Deceased 2015

From Bapak:

Pak Cik Pau married 3 times:
1. Minah
2. Maznah
3. Fatimah

First marriage

Minah was a midwife/nurse at Masjid Tanah and was a relative of Tun Ghafar Baba. When Pak Cik Pau refused to marry Mak Cik Minah, dia hilangkan diri, cabut lari. Mak Cik Minah worked in Tampin, near Nenek Yah's place in Tampin. Later, people advised Pak Cik Pau to marry Mak Cik Minah and then divorce her if he didn't want Ghafar Baba and family to be involved and take action against him for refusing to marry Mak Cik Minah. He did so. He married Mak Cik Minah and then divorced her.

Second marriage

Then Pak Cik Pau married Mak Cik Maznah. Pak Cik Pau was hot tempered, and always scolded Mak Cik Maznah and their 2 kids. At last he divorced her. Mak Cik Maznah sold cakes in Selayang to support her 2 kids. She died from exhaustion.

Mak Cik Maznah's children are:
1. Mohd Suhaimi
2. Muslifah

Suhaimi married but has no children. Muslifah married but is divorced. Pak Cik Pau has no grandchildren.

Third marriage

Then Pak Cik Pau  married Mak Cik Fatimah. Her kids are all grown up. He has remained with Mak Cik Fatimah till now.

From me:
Pak Cik Pau is the most handsome of Bapak's brothers. Bapak is also handsome. Mak Cik Maznah was very kind and spoke softly. She cooked good dishes when we visited her at home.
Mak Cik Maznah became a single parent and supported her kids by selling cakes in Selayang. She always confided in Mak (I was in TKC then but heard from Mak). Mak helped her financially. She worked very hard, fell ill, and died. Mak became very sad when Mak Cik Maznah died.
Temper is something that runs in men. When syaitan invades humans, it can give rise to anger. The only way out of anger is to read Quran and avoid inheriting saka (evil spirits).

Pak Cik Pau passed away in 2015. I didn't get to see him. I met him when he came to our house in Minden Heights, Penang when Bapak died in March 2009. He was already unwell then.

Bapak's Brothers

Bapak has 5 brothers:
1. Abu Bakar bin Mohd Yusope
2. Jaafar bin Mohd Yusope
3. Bapak
4. Baharuddin bin Mohd Yusope
5. Saleh bin Mohd Yusope
6. Idris bin Mohd Yusope

Abu Bakar (Pak Bakar) married and lived in Malaysia and Singapore. Divorced. Deceased. 2 children.

Jaafar (Pak Cik Pau) married twice and lived in Negeri Sembilan and KL. 2 children with first wife, Mak Cik Maznah. Divorced. Remarried to Mak Cik Fatimah (a nurse). No children with second wife.

Baharuddin (Pak Din) married Mak Cik Fauziah and lived in KL. Both deceased. 2 children but son died. Surviving married daughter - Noraini (Noni).

The graves are to the left of the mimbar if I stand inside the masjid.
The graves are immediately in front of the masjid building outside.

Macam mana nak pergi kubur dan mencari kedudukan kubur?
Lalu depan tangga utama masjid and berjalan ke arah tandas/tempat wudhuk lelaki. Lalu ikut lorong di antara masjid dan tandas lelaki, dan naik ke atas bukit di belakang masjid. Bukit ini amat curam, tanah serta batunya tajam, dan berwarna merah (red laterite rocks and soil). Patah kanan, ikut tepi masjid. Akan temu kubur berhampiran mimbar masjid.
Dengan menghadap menara Masjid Semabok, jalan melepasi tangga dan ikut  sebelah kiri dalam gambar ini (go to the left).
Pergi ke kiri lagi (walk to the left).

Jalan lagi ... lalu pasu bunga (walk past the flower pots).
Kubur Hj Mohd Sharif bin Ismail (tok moyang sebelah Bapak).
Kubur Patma, isteri Hj Mohd Sharif bin Ismail. Nama penuh Patma tidak diketahui. Tapi Bapak kata dia putih macam Cina.

-------
From Bapak, 2007:

HM Shah was Bapak's relative.

Bapak was a penjual kuih by the seaside. Bapak met "nenek"(which nenek?) when Bapak sold putu piring by the beach in Malacca and when Bapak worked in the Parliament as Simultaneous Interpreter (BI-BM)

HM Shah's aunts wore gold ornaments (makcik-makcik pakai emas).

HM Shah drove a Buick.

HM Shah would stopover in Malacca when en route to Penang. He would pick up Bapak as his guide and driver. While driving, they went past a short signboard (to Ipoh) that was partially hidden, and they got lost. They entered a quiet tiny road, a communist road! However, they went through the communist road and reached Penang safely.

-------
From Mak, 1972-1973:

Mak said HM Shah came to see her to ask about how and where about to build a seaside inn. He asked Mak for ideas. Mak gave him her ideas. Mak said he came to see her a few times.

HM Shah then opened an inn called Shah's Village and Resort, at Tanjung Keling, Melaka.

------
From me:

At the time when HM Shah came to see Mak for ideas for his seaside inn, I was in Form 2-3 (1972-3) at the Malacca Girls' High School (MGHS) in Durian Daun.

Then I went away to TKC, Seremban for Form 4, 5 and 6.

I have never met H. M. Shah, but I have heard about him, first from Mak, and later from Bapak. Mak described him to me in the early 1970s. Bapak related about him in 2007, 2 years before Bapak passed away.

Klebang is after Limbongan, where Mak Sekmah and Pak Cik Mohamad and family had lived adjacent to Masjid Limbongan.

Limbongan was an ancient seaport, and where the Indians were brought into early Malacca by the British colonial masters.

Under Dutch rule, and later, the British rule, the people of Malacca were seggregated according to races and religions, and lived in different parts of Malacca. The non Muslim Chinese lived at Bukit China, near Durian Daun. The Chinese Muslims lived at Tengkera - they were rich imams. The Indian Muslims lived at Kg Pali, which is near Masjid Kg Keling at Jonker Street- they were educated Indians, including Munshi Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir, who worked for Stamford Raffles in early Singapore. The Arab, Javanese, and Sumatran Muslims lived at Banda Hilir, Umbai, Ujong Pasir and Pengkalan Rama - they spread Islam to Malacca. The Babas and Nyonyas occupied the brick terraced shophouses in Banda Hilir - they were rich business people. The descendants of the Portuguese lived in tiny houses at the Portuguese Settlement by the sea - they were fishermen. The white Christians lived in bungalows in Banda Hilir and Durian Daun, Malacca.

Dr Carleel Merican and second wife Sarah (a Nyonya) and family also lived in Klebang. They lived behind Kamariah Md Nor's house. Kamariah bt Md Nor's father was a famous early homeopathic Malay doctor - Dr (H) Md Nor bin Noordin. Both her parents were from Singapore and settled in Klebang. Kamariah's daughter is married to a descendant of HM Shah.

Al-Yamani in Malacca and Penang

Clan name: none specific.

Bapak said that the Arab clans have mostly intermarried. As such all the Syeds are related by intermarriage. Please refer to the chart on Syed names.

Source: http://banialawi.com/v1/

Geographical honorific: Al-Yamani

Al Yamani refers to the origin of people from Yemen (negara Yaman) in the Arabian Peninsula.

Yaman is a country at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. It was 2 divided countries before 1990 - North Yemen on the left half and South Yemen on the right half. Yemen was unified in 1990, with the capital at Sana'a.

Bapak's Syed relatives in Singapore pointed out that they still had relatives in Indonesia who returned to Sayhun and passed away in Sayhun, a city in Hadramaut, Southern Yemen - now just Yemen.

I have not heard of Bapak's relatives using Al Sayhun as their name suffix. The ones that Bapak mentioned were Alattas, Alhabshi, Alaidid, Alhadi and maybe a few more which I cannot recall off-hand.

Many of Bapak's relatives chose to use the geographical honorific Al Yamani or Alyamani as suffix in their names.

Bapak said that just mentioning Al Yamani is sufficient to recognise clan members of the original Yemeni people here in Malaysia.

Map of Yemen
(Peta negara Yaman)

From Bapak in 2007:

Bapak mentioned that there is Makam Shahbuddin Al-Yamani in the graveyard of Masjid Tengkera, Malacca. He is an Indian from Tranquera (orang India Tengkera) and has relatives in Singapore.

---

There are Klang relatives who are related to the Penang relatives, who also used Alyamani in their names.

----

I visited and interviewed Nenek Umi Kalthom bt Mohd Yunos @ Wan Teh (80) at her home in Kg Melayu Batu Uban, Penang on 5 June 2013. Her husband, son and daughter joined in at different times.

Nenek Kalthom also mentioned Hawa Alyamani, who is related to Ami Aziz.

-----

Ami Aziz also uses the suffix Alyamani. His name is therefore Abdul Aziz bin Sheikh Mohamed Al Yamani.
