NOTES FROM TRAVELLERS TO MALACCA

Completed in 1748, the architecture of this mosque is Sumatran with strong Hindu influences. This is particularly evident in the minaret which resembles a pagoda. On closer inspection, you will find an unusual blend of English and Portuguese glazed tiles, Corinthian columns with symmetrical arches in the main prayer hall, which you can look into but not enter, a Victorian chandelier, a wooden pulpit with Hindu and Chinese-style carvings, and Moorish cast iron lamp-posts in the place of abulation for pre-prayer cleansing. In 1868 a high wall was erected to protect the mosque from the street. Chinese ceramic tiles were imported to adorn the roof, the floor and the lower walls. Decorative motifs such as the curved eaves terminating in sculptural finials further point to an Oriental influence, as is the rooftop ornament, or mastaka.

Architecturally interesting, the Kampung Kling Mosque is one of the oldest surviving mosques in the country. The Sumatran influence is very apparent from its three-tiered pyramid-shaped roof, in of the more conventional dome. The free-standing minaret resembles a pagoda, again reflecting an infusion of Oriental influences.

Freshly painted, it continues to serve faithfully as a popular venue of worship for the local Muslim community.

The mosque is open to visitors but do observe the rules and common practices of the Muslim premises. (e.g. do not, among other things, appear in short-sleeve T-shirts, short pants or mini skirts)

The Kumpung Kling mosque is the oldest mosque in Melaka. Right smack in town, it is only a short walk from Jonker Street. The mosque's design is very Melakan, as in, you will be nice glazed tiles of the "historic era". At the back of the mosque, you will find the area where workshippers clean themselves before entering the prayer hall. Only muslims are allowed to enter the prayer hall and if you are not appropriately attired, grab one of the black robes which are available for use.

Though famously known as the Masjid Kampung Kling, the mosque is also known by a few other names such as Masjid Kampung Pali (Kampung Pali Mosque), Masjid Kampung Balik Pali (Kampung Balik Pali Mosque) and Masjid Kampung Kapur (Kampung Kapur Mosque).

Built in 1748, it is one of the oldest mosques in the country thats features Sumatran architectural predominantly. Instead of a typical conventional dome, the mosque has a three-tier roof rising like a pyramid in its place. Its pagoda-like minaret portrays a mixture of East-West architectural influence. The concrete minaret is located separately from the main block on the west wing while an ablution pool is located in the south wing. A special device made from marble to tell the prayer times is located just beside the pool, a remain of the days when clock was not widely used then.

The site of the Mosque is said to be the exact spot where the Indian Muslim traders, who came to Melaka to trade their goods and wares in the 14th and 15th century, had performed their prayers on arrival in Melaka. The beach, which is today located a few kilometers from this site, is said to be the usual landing spots for traders from the Indian sub-continent. The traders continued to use the site for their rituals and before long, the locals started learning from these traders and as a result, more and more locals converted to Islam.

Masjid Kampung Kling and its neighbours Cheng Hoon Teng Temple and Sri Poyatha Venayaga Moorthi Temple form part of the "street of harmony", a symbolic example of racial and religious tolerent that have long be in existence in the country.

JAFFAR BIN SAID (JAAFAR RAWAS)

JAFFAR BIN SAID (JAAFAR RAWAS)

A famous Hadrami Arab in Kelantan was the late Jaffar Rawas, the founder-owner of Syarikat Jaffar Rawas Sdn Bhd at 1962, Jalan Dato Pati, 15000 Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Tel: 09-748-1073. He was a trader of Quran, Islamic books, Halal foods, garments and prayer items.

I met Jaffar Rawas in 1969-1971 when he came over to our house at Maktab Perguruan Kota Bharu (MPKB) in P. Chepa and had pulut durian Thai-style, and another time when my father was talking to him at his shop in KB. He spoke good Malay to my sibs and me. He gave clear instructions on how to eat pulut durian Thai-style (gaul pulut, durian, santan, gula Melaka dan makan dengan tangan). It was the first time I saw someone eating durian in this manner.

I remember Jaffar Rawas was of big build. He wore an Afghan musafir 3-piece suit and a white headgear. He was already very old and had long white beard when I met him.

Ida Husain : Jaffar Rawas was a nephew of my late step-grandfather Sheikh Ali. He passed away many years ago and his children have taken over his business. I know a few of them but the one named Abdul will always be the one who will chat with me if I meet him. The others that l can recall are Aziz and Abdullah. I have a step-aunty Umi Fatimah who is my late father's half-sister that l have not met for such a very long time who may shed some light on Aruah Jaffar Rawas.

Roots, family tree and early settlers of Penang
  • Yusof ialah saudara sebelah Bapak.
  • Refer to the book by Prof Ahmad Murad Merican for details of his family tree.
  • There is a flowchart of his family tree, but it is lacking information at many branches.
  • Yusof was of Sumatran Minangkabau royal descent ... of the ill-fated Pagaruyung Palace which burnt to the ground in the shape of a horse after a lightning strike.
  • Yusof bin Ishak is from the Datuk Jannatun (Dato' Jenaton) clan.
  • He was descended from Datuk Jannatun of West Sumatra. Datuk Jannatun and his brother Datuk Setia came to Penang in 1879, when given the bounty of a hilly area (Bukit Jannatun) by the Sultan of Kedah, for defeating Siamese advancement on Kedah. At the time, Penang was under the Kedah Sultanate.
  • Datuk Jannatun was the brother-in-law of Nakhoda nan Intan.
  • Nakhoda nan Intan was a Sunni imam, Sufi master, religious community leader and a ship captain. Nakhoda nan Intan sailed to Penang and opened a Malay-Arab village at Batu Uban. He built Masjid Batu Uban in 1734, the first and oldest mosque on Penang island, well before the British East India Company arrived in Penang.
  • Nakhoda nan Intan's brother, Nakhoda Kecil went to invite Captain Francis Light to Penang's shore at Tanjong Penaga - now George Town.
  • Nakhoda nan Intan had married four wives - one in Sumatra, one in Singapore, one in Tengkera in Malacca, and one at Kg Batu Uban in Penang.
  • Nakhoda nan Intan built a mosque at every port of call. The one in Singapore is the more recent Masjid Haji Muhammad Salleh of 1894. Nakhoda nan Intan was a close friend of Habib Noh Alhabshi. Their descendants married and can be found in Malaysia. Nakhoda nan Intan built Masjid Tengkera in 1728. He last built Masjid Batu Uban in 1734. He died in Penang and is buried in the Muslim-Arab graveyard of Masjid Batu Uban in Penang. I don't have his date of birth and demise.

Tracing the descendants of Nakhoda Nan Intan in Tranquera, Malacca

Faridah Abdul Rashid
Encik Ismail bin Hamid, Secretary of JK Masjid Tranquera called and asked about Nakhoda Nan Intan. Nakhoda Nan Intan had built Masjid Tengkera in 1728, much earlier than Masjid Batu Uban in Penang which was built in 1734. His descendants today are concentrated near Masjid Tengkera, however, they are Indians. Muzium Melaka wants the history of Masjid Tengkera. I can only provide what I know. Do you know? Can you help? My blog is at 262 Banda Hilir.

    Assalamu'alaikum,

I obtained your name from Ayah Wan Merican Noordin in my Facebook.
I'm tracing a few people and stories about them.
I'm writing to ask whether you would know about the following:

    1. Nakhoda Nan Intan and his families
    2. Makam Shabuddin in Tranquerah
    3. Dato HM Shah's family

Encik Ismail bin Hamid, Secretary of JK Masjid Tranquera called me earlier today (11 June 2013) to ask re Nakhoda nan Intan. I am a 10th generation of descendants from Nakhoda Nan Intan from my late father's side who was from Banda Hilir, Malacca. My father also had family ties to Dato HM Shah's family. My father mentioned there is a Makam Shahbuddin in Tranquerah. Would you happen to know about any of the above? This is my blog on this matter: http://262bandahilir.blogspot.com/

Deli

Nakhoda nan Intan's first wife

The first wife of Haji Muhammad Saleh (Nakhoda nan Intan) was from Deli. Deli is a famous seaport on the east coast of Sumatra. Deli is always mentioned in Malay maritime history.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deli_Serdang_Regency

His first wife was known as Che Pah Deli. She was probably a Sharifah and Che Pah was her popular call name. I have no update on her descendants or what happened to her. I have not been to Deli.

Deli Music

Deli music is joyful and cheerful, and are meant for group dances, stage or public performance. Deli music has Spanish flair, some tango/flamenco elements, and Filipino dance beat. The music of the Malay people of Deli (Melayu Deli) is fast tempo like the Malay Joget and Jingling Nona, and similar to the music of the descendants of the Portuguese at the Portuguese Settlement in Malacca. The violin is dominant in Deli music as in popular Portuguese dance music. The lyrics are in the form of pantun (quatrains) and are often about love, a loved one, and missing home.

Deli Malay songs:
Selayang Pandang
Tanjung Katung

Sultanate of Deli
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sultanate_of_Deli

Since Nakhoda nan Intan was in Deli and had married a Deli lady, he must have known or have come into contact with the Sultan of Deli at that time - most probably Tuanku Panglima Paderap (1698-1728) and/or less likely with the successor Tuanku Panglima Pasutan (1728-1761) as he was already in Singapore and then Malacca.

Nakhoda nan Intan was in Singapore at the turn of the 18th century (from 1700s to before 1728). He was a close friend of Habib Noh Alhabshi in Singapore. His original surau/madrassah/masjid in Singapore would have been built between 1700s and 1728, after which he moved to Tengkera in Malacca. The recent Masjid Haji Muhammad Saleh was constructed circa 1897.

Nakhoda nan Intan was in Malacca circa 1728. He built Masjid Tengkera, Malacca in 1728. He had family in Malacca. The 5th generation of Nakhoda nan Intan's descendants are from Tengkera in Malacca.

Nakhoda nan Intan was in Penang circa 1734. He built Masjid Batu Uban in 1734. He had family in Batu Uban, The 5th generation of Nakhoda nan Intan's descendants are from Batu Uban in Penang.

The lineage of the Sultans of Deli:
  1. Tuanku Panglima Gocah Pahlawan (1632-1669).
  2. Tuanku Panglima Parunggit (1669-1698).
  3. Tuanku Panglima Paderap (1698-1728) ... Nakhoda nan Intan must have known him
  4. Tuanku Panglima Pasutan (1728-1761) ... Nakhoda nan Intan could have known him.
  5. Tuanku Panglima Gandar Wahid (1761-1805).
  6. Sultan Amaluddin Mangendar (1805-1850).
  7. Sultan Osman Perkasa Alam Shah (1850-1858).
  8. Sultan Mahmud Al Rashid Perkasa Alamsyah (1858-1873).

MINANGKABAU-INDIAN- CHINESE HERITAGE
Pagaruyung-Hadramaut in Yemen-China links

1. From here we can guess Tok Sharif's long name from his Minangkabau roots of Nakhoda Nan Intan:

Haji Mohamad Sharif  bin Ismail bin Mohamad Saleh bin Khatib Usuf bin ..???...bin Muhammad Salleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan.

2. So my Minangkabau paternal long name can possibly be like this:

Faridah bt Abdul Rashid bin Mohd Yusope bin Haji Mohamad Sharif  bin Ismail bin Mohamad Saleh bin Khatib Usuf bin ...???....bin Muhammad Salleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan.

3. An alternative long name via my Minangkabau great-grandfather and his Chinese mother and her Javanese Indian Muslim father is like this:

Faridah bt Abdul Rashid bin Mohd Yusope bin Haji Mohamad Sharif son of Inche Nyonia binte Tuan Sheik Mohamad Sahabudin bin...??? ..... from ...????...

TUAN SHEIK MOHAMAD SAHABUDIN
Makam Shahbuddin Al-Yamani, Tranquera, Malacca (some say the makam is in Banda Hilir at Jalan Panjang)
Yemeni link to Malacca

Tok Hj Mohd Sharif's mother is Inche Nyonia binte Tuan Sheik Mohamad Sahabudin. Who is Tuan Sheik Mohamad Sahabudin? What is his full name? Where was he from? Was he from Tengkera (Tranquera)? Was he an imam of any masjid? Was he an Indian? No idea, could be. See what Bapak said below. Was he Javanese? Possibly, yes, from Cirebon. See history of Masjid Banda Hilir from its AJK Masjid.

From Bapak:
There is a Makam Shahbuddin Al-Yamani in Tranquera, Malacca (orang India Tranquera). He is an Indian and has relatives in Singapore.

Who are the relatives of Tuan Sheik Mohamad Sahabudin bin Amin in Singapore? I don't know.

Maheran Ahmad said she doesn't know about Makam Shahbuddin Al-Yamani in Tranquera. She will search.

Mahadhir Mohamad said Makam Shahbuddin Al-Yamani is in Banda Hilir at Jalan Panjang. He gave a pic of a yellow makam with a blue metal plate.

MASJID TRANQUERA 1728
Jalan Tengkera, Bandaraya Melaka
& Makam Shahbuddin Al-Yamani, Tranquera, Malacca

Masjid Tranquera was built in 1728 and has Islamic-Chinese architecture with square 3-tiered roofs and a 50-feet pagoda-like minaret.

The masjid was rebuilt in 1821 and was ready by 1850. The original wooden structures were maintained and were not removed.

There are hundreds of ancient graves outside the masjid, including that of Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor-Singapura who passed away in 1835.

This masjid was recognised as the state masjid till a new one was built. Masjid Al-Azim was opened in 1993.

Tranquera is a Portuguese word which means barrier (benteng).

Tranquera Road (Jalan Tengkera) was one of the early roads in Malacca (circa 1500s).

This masjid has been gazetted as a heritage building.

MASJID KG HULU 1728
Jalan Masjid, Bandaraya Melaka
& Keramat Gubah, Bukit Beruang, Malacca

Masjid Kg Hulu was built in 1728 (some say 1720) by Dato Shamsuddin. It has a 3-tiered roof (bumbung tangkup tiga) and a pagoda-like minaret (menara bentuk pagoda). The masjid was renovated several times over but the original wooden masjid structure has been maintained.

Datuk Shamsuddin is the son of Dato Aroon @ Haron who originated from China and became a Muslim. In 1700, Dato Aroon was appointed as the first Malay captain (Kapitan Melayu I) to look after the affairs of the Malay community. The title was inherited by his son.

Since Dato Aroon originated from China, there are many Chinese inscriptions (tulisan Cina) inside the masjid.

Makam Dato Aroon (father) and Dato Shamsuddin (son) are at Bukit Beruang and are known as Keramat Gubah.

This masjid has been gazetted as a heritage building.

I still prefer to call this masjid by its original and popular name, Masjid Banda Hilir.

Imam 1-5 above are related and are descendants of Nakhoda Nan Intan, while Imam 6-8 above are unrelated to the people of Banda Hilir or the descendants of Nakhoda Nan Intan.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

What is the family tree of Nakhoda Nan Intan like?

There is a family tree of Nakhoda Nan Intan, which is prepared in tulisan Jawi. The tulisan Jawi is very tiny.

I received a copy of Nakhoda Nan Intan's family tree (tulisan Jawi) from Nenek Umi Kalthom bt Mohd Yunus @ Wan Teh when I interviewed her at her home in Kg Melayu Batu Uban in Penang on 5 June 2013.

Nakhoda Nan Intan was descended from Dato' Pepatih Nan Sebatang who lived in the village named Kampong Bodi, in the district of Payakumbuh in the highlands of West Sumatra.

Nakhoda Nan Intan married 3 wives:
1. Suripadi from Payakumbuh
2. Che Aminah Deli
3. Che Aishah (Che Tunggal)

Since he married a wife in Penang, Malacca and Singapore, there should be 3 separate family trees of Nakhoda Nan Intan's descendants today.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

Nakhoda Nan Intan probably stayed longest in Penang; Hj Ashari bin Mohd Saleh became the first imam of Masjid Banda Hilir. This Mohd Saleh could not be Nakhoda Nan Intan who lived circa early 1700s while Masjid Banda Hilir was more recent (1820); more than 100 years apart.

If we arrange the names of the imams, we get this:

Hj Mohd Sharif bin Ismail bin ___ bin ___ bin ___ bin ...???

Hj Noordin is the younger brother of Hj Mohd Sharif. He probably became imam when his elder brother died some time in 1912, after Hj Md Sharif returned from Makkah and built the 262-T Banda Hilir house.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

So for me and my father's lineage, we get this:

(i) Via Walid's paternal links:

Bapak said 8 generations (8 people) before him died at 262-T Banda Hilir house.

Nakhoda Nan Intan passed away and is buried in Batu Uban, Penang.

Hjh Faridah bt Hj Abdul Rashid (Bapak) bin Hj Mohd Yusope (Walid) bin (Imam) Hj Mohd Sharif bin Ismail bin Jailani bin __ .

(ii) Via Walid's maternal link:

Hjh Faridah bt Hj Abdul Rashid (Bapak) bin Hj Mohd Yusope (Walid) s/o Patma bt Sheikh Mohamad bin Salem Al Yamani (Arab dari Yaman)

Patma d/o Siti Hawa bt Jailani (Merak Mas?) bin Tahir bin Jusoh bin Ismail @ Nakhoda Kechil.

I am the 9th generation of Nakhoda Kechil. Nakhoda Kechil was much younger than Nakhoda Nan Intan, and had met Captain Francis Light in Penang. So he must have lived circa 1786.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

From the family tree in tulisan Jawi which Nenek Umi Kalthom (Kg Melayu Batu Uban, Penang) gave me, Nakhoda Nan Intan had 2 children, a girl and a boy. The girl is named Zaitun and the boy Muhammad Ali.

Children of Nakhoda Nan Intan (Penang base):
1. Zaitun bt Muhammad Saleh
2. Muhammad Ali bin Muhammad Saleh

Both the children of Nakhoda Nan Intan had issues but the family trees were incomplete, and did not show where each was domiciled.

This could be Nakhoda Nan Intan's lineages in Penang or limited to his Penang base. Bapak mentioned that Nakhoda Nan Intan had married a lady at each port of call - in Singapore, Malacca and Penang. So there should be at least 3 family trees of Nakhoda Nan Intan - one each for Singapore, Malacca and Penang.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

I have not seen Nakhoda Nan Intan's family trees from his descendants in Malacca and Singapore. But what I know is (and Bapak said) there are intermarriages between families in Singapore, Malacca and Penang. In fact, from the book The Real Cry of Syed Shaykh al-Hady, there was mention of Riau and the names of the Arab-Malay ladies (of Nakhoda Nan Intan's descendants) who married into the al-Hady families.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

Bapak mentioned that all the Arabs in Malaysia are related and connected by marriage. Bapak was related to the Syeds of Jelutong, the Al-Yamani people of both Penang and Malacca, the Aidids of Penang and Singapore, the Bajerai of Malacca and Perth, the Al-Junied of Singapore, the Rawas family of Yemen (arwah Jaafar Rawas who settled in Kota Bharu, Kelantan), the Al-Attas family, the Al-Habshi family, the Jamalullail family, etc.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

Mak was related to Syed Habib Noh's family of Singapore and Penang. Habib Noh's people are in Penang. As I recalled one descendant's family (Puan Azizah Begum bt Said Habib Nohu) lived in Jalan Dato Keramat in Penang but many have died and moved away. The women used Bibi, Begam/Begum or Hanoum in their names. Some say Hanoum was from Syed Sheikh's short stories; Hanoum became a fad but the name stuck for good and generations have used the name suffix.

Haji Muhammad Salleh (3)

Haji Muhammad Salleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan bin Nan Tunku Patis Sebatang

Full name: Haji Muhammad Salleh bin Nan Tunku Patis Sebatang
Call name: Tuan Haji Muhammad Salleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan
His father: "Nan Tunku Betis Sabatang" was an inherited title and means revered or 'yang dimuliakan' in Bahasa Minangkabau, according to Nasir - a descendant of Nakhoda Nan Intan, who spoke at the 7th Dato Jenaton Family Reunion at INTEKMA Shah Alam on 27 November 2016.
His mother: __
Sibs: __

Residence: Istana Besar Pagar Ruyung (Istano Basa Pagaruyung)
Village: Kampong Buadi (Kampong Bodi)
District: Paya Kumboh (Payakumbuh)
Province: West Sumatra
Country: Indonesia
Time period: 1600-1700 AD, before the original and second Pagaruyung palace burnt down for good.

WHO WAS NAKHODA NAN INTAN?

He was descended from Dato' Pepatih nan Sebatang who lived in the village named Kampong Bodi, in the district of Payakumbuh in the highlands of West Sumatra.

On record and from family tree charts, he married 3 wives:
1. Suripadi from Payakumbuh ......... a lady in Payakumbuh
2. Che Aminah Deli ......................... a lady in Deli
3. Che Aishah (Che Tunggal) .......... a lady in Penang (island)

In reality, he married more than 3 wives. However, only 3 wives are known, minus the wife he married in Tengkera, Malacca, before coming to Penang. His descendants in Tengkera are alive today. One of his grandsons, Haji Abdul Latiff Tambi @ Ulama' Nusantara, married his last wife (Bi bt Abdullah) in Penang. Whether he had married a lady in Singapore before coming to Malacca, is yes, since we have his descendants today. Whether any of his wives died before he married another wife, is unknown. Whether he divorced any previous wife before remarriage is unknown.

He had lived in Singapore. Singapore sage Habib Noh Alhabshi lived many years after Nakhoda Nan Intan had passed away at Batu Uban, Penang. They may not have met, or another man by a similar name could have met and became friends with Alhabshi. Alhabshi or Habshah implies the place of origin as Ethiopia.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

THE STORY ABOUT NAKHODA'S ARRIVAL IN PENANG

He migrated from Payakumbuh in the interior to Batu Bara on the east coast of Sumatra. He married in Deli. He then sailed across the Straits of Malacca and arrived in Singapore. He settled in Singapore. He then moved to Malacca. He married in Tengkera, Malacca. He then sailed past Perak, and finally reached Penang. He settled in Batu Uban, where a Malay village started - Kampung Batu Uban.

He was an alim (singular of ulama') and was devoted to the masjid. He built Masjid Batu Uban in Penang in 1734.

Many clergymen from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Makkah, and Baghdad came to his masjid and village in Penang. Intermarriages took place with his descendants and the other migrant families.

He arrived in Penang well before Captain Francis Light arrived in Penang in 1789. Captain Francis Light arrived at the northern tip near North Bay, at Tanjung Penaga - a cape named after a fragrant flowering tree that grew in abundance at the cape. It is still known as Tanjung or Tanjung Penaga today. Tanjung refers to George Town, the city centre.

He served as imam Masjid Batu Uban till he died. He is interred under a gigantic banyan tree. The gigantic tree with roots trailing all over and covered his grave, and damaged its walls and columns. His grave is located in the middle of the crumbled makam. Another more recent grave lies to the left of his grave.

He built Masjid Batu Uban, the oldest masjid in Penang and second oldest after Masjid Kampung Laut in Kelantan. Masjid Kampung Laut was shifted from Tumpat to Nilam Puri to avoid land erosion and losing the masjid altogether. Masjid Batu Uban is at its original site, by the sea previously, but now after land reclamation, it is quite far from the sea. Two highways separate the renovated Masjid Jamek Batu Uban from the seashore.

Before land reclamation, the sea was near the masjid. Every time the tide was high, it came up to the rear well which had to be covered. The well only has 2 keret, and is 2-keret deep. Each keret is a concrete ring measuring approximately 2 feet tall. So the well is about 4 feet deep and is full of water. Even though the well is by the sea, it contains freshwater and does not smell of chlorine or seawater. The water from the well is softwater and is very light to the touch. An electric pump helps to pump water from the ancient well to the small ablution pool in front (by the road side).

An ancient well belonging to Masjid Jamek Batu Uban, Penang. The wellwater is used for ablution.

SITI KECHIK ROKIAH BT SHAIKH ABDUL RAHMAN AL-BAGHDADI

Siti Kechik Rokiah bt Shaikh Abdul Rahman al-Baghdadi (Batu Uban) married to Ahmad bin Abdullah bin Dato' Jenaton (b.1852).

Siti Kechik Rokiah was known as Siti Rokiah Kecik or Long Rokiah. The 2 other call names could be the same individual or different individuals from different mothers (same father).

My comments:
Rokiah was probably the eldest daughter but was of small build. Thus, Siti Kechik Rokiah and Siti Rokiah Kecik could allude to her small stature or build while Long Rokiah could indicate her as being the eldest, from the word "sulong" and shortened to "Long". It is rare that a father would name his daughters by similar names.

NAKHODA

My comments:
We have to be careful with the word Nakhoda and with whom it is associated. The word Nakhoda Nan Intan is associated with the Minangkabau ship's captain, and he was a Sunni Muslim.

However, Nakhoda (used singly) is also separately associated with the Shiah sect and the followers can be found in Singapore. Shiah is banned in Malaysia but is allowed in Singapore and elsewhere.

NAKHODA NAN INTAN'S FAMILY TREE

Nenek Umi Kalthom's husband, Tok Shaikh Mohamed read the family tree in tulisan Jawi which was prepared by Nakhoda Nan Intan's people. He couldn't see very well so Affandi lent him his low-powered glasses. Even with the glasses on, Tok Shaikh Mohamed could hardly read Nakhoda's family tree. I think the tulisan Jawi was so small and very difficult to decipher.

Tok Sk Mohamed bin Sk Ali bin Sk Mohd Hassan Al-Khaiyath. He is holding the document that has Nakhoda Nan Intan's family tree. Nakhoda Nan Intan's family tree was kept by Nenek Umi Kalthom at her Batu Uban home in Penang.

This was what Tok Shaikh Mohamed read slowly and with difficulty:

Nakhoda nan Intan ibni al-Marhum Tengku Patih nan Sebatang was from Kampung Buadi, Paya Kumboh. He married 3 wives:

ISTANA PAGARUYUNG, WEST SUMATRA

From my reading, Istana Pagaruyung was razed to the ground 3 times, each time it was re-built. It seemed like a bad omen.

WHAT NENEK UMI KALTHOM SAID ABOUT ISTANA PAGARUYUNG
