There was a Mohd Amin bin Mahmud present at a gathering in the 1930s at the Sultan Sulaiman Club in Kg Baharu, which was close to his home - across the padang. He was at a gathering with Dr Che Lah bin Mohd Joonos and Dr Abdul Ghani bin Mohammad, both doctors graduated from the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore in March 1930, and were from Penang, but were serving in Selangor.

Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos later took Mohd Amin's daughter, Aishah bt Mohd Amin, for Hajj in 1962/1963.

Family background

Both datuk moyang Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail and his wife Fatimah bt Mohamad are related. They are descendants of Nakhoda nan Intan and his people in Malacca, but re-settled in Penang in the late 1800s-early 1900s.

Haji Mohd Sharif is descended from the Malacca wife of Nakhoda nan Intan - the original village could be at Tengkerah, Kg Hulu or even Kg Pali.

Haji Mohd Sharif's mother is Inche Nyonya bte Shahabudin, imam of Masjid Tengkerah, who is actually a Chinese Muslim, possibly directly from mainland China as Masjid Tengkerah has a lot of imported colourful porcelain tiles. I don't know if he was a convert or a born Muslim.

Bapak said there is Makam Shahbudin in Tengkerah - that could be him. There is another Makam Shahbudin in Jalan Panjang near Rumah Banda Hilir. However, this Imam Shahbudin in Jalan Panjang could be an imam from Cirebon, Java in Indonesia. According to Mahadzir bin Mohamad (cicit Tok Haji Nordin), some people used to visit Makam Shahbudin in Jalan Panjang. However, they have stopped visiting that makam.

Nakhoda nan Intan was a famous imam from Pagaruyung, Sumatera Barat. He was a close friend of Habib Noh Alhabshi in Singapore. Mak is a descendant of Habib Noh Alhabshi.

Nakhoda nan Intan built Masjid Tengkerah in 1728. He then moved to Penang and built Masjid Jamek Batu Uban in 1734.

Fatimah is the sister of Ami Aziz Alyamani of Jelutong, Penang. Fatimah is written as Patma in Walid's BC. Bapak also cited her as Patma. Their father is Mohamad bin Abdullah, a descendant of Nakhoda nan Intan in Malacca or Penang. Bapak described Patma as "putih macam Cina."

Ami Aziz originated from Kg Hulu or Tengkerah, Malacca. He left Malacca to marry his relative, Sharifah Rahmah in Jelutong and settled in Jelutong. Sharifah Rahmah is descended from Syed Sheikh Al-Hadi.

Syed Sheikh Al-Hadi was born in Kg Hulu in Malacca and moved to many places to work, including Pulau Penyengat (Riau, Indonesia), Johor, Makkah and Penang. He finally settled in Penang.

Walid's birth

Bapak gave me a copy of Walid's birth certificate(BC). Walid was born at home on 11 February 1896 in Rumah Banda Hilir, Malacca. His birth was registered by Zenal (Tok Zainal) - the Walid's BC had Tok Zainal's name as registrant.

Why did Tok Zainal register Walid's birth? Where was Tok moyang Haji Mohd Sharif when Walid was born?

Tok moyang Haji Mohd Sharif was probably in Makkah - he went with 2 other men. Upon his return, he built Rumah Banda Hilir.

Bapak said Rumah Bandar Hilir was built in stages. The oldest part was the rear building which had atap roof. The more recent building was the big Rumah Banda Hilir which Tok moyang Haji Mohd Sharif built after his return from the Hajj in Makkah in 1897. This big house had atap genting (clay roof tiles).

Rumah Banda Hilir existed for 110 years, from 1897 to 2007, when it was demolished to extend Masjid Banda Hilir. I lived there after I was born in 1958 at Malacca Hospital, till I was 5 years old; the big house was 61-65 years old, and the floor planks were strong but had plenty of holes. The rear building was thin walls like wafer.

A hut was built for Walid and Nenek Inche near the toilet side when they got married. They did not sleep in the big house, but in the hut (bangsal kayu). The hut was demolished when we lived in Rumah Banda Hilir in 1950s-1960s.

Tarikh tepat Mohd Amin meninggal dunia tidak diketahui, tetapi arwah Bapak ada beritahu Mohd Amin meninggal dunia apabila Bapak terjatuh. Bapak pun tak ingat bila tarikh sebenar Mohd Amin meninggal dunia. Pak Cik Hassan (Kajang) memberitahu Mohd Amin mungkin meninggal in 1936. Ini bermakna Bapak berusia 5 tahun semasa Mohd Amin meninggal dunia.

Ini bermakna, anak sulungnya lahir semasa ia berusia 12/13 tahun. Mak Bedah kata jarak antara Nenek Inche dan anak sulungnya hanya 13 tahun, mereka macam adik-beradik.

In my notes, I wrote that she was born in 1906, based on her age at death.

However, according to Mak Bedah, Nenek Inche died in 1978 at age 71. So her DOB is 1978 - 71 = May-July 1907.

Jika dikira "reproductive age" Nenek Inche, ia melahirkan anak terakhir pada 1945. She was productive for 26 years (38 - 12) or 27 years (39 - 12). She had reached menopause at the end of the war? Pak Saleh was born in February 1945 during the war. The war ended in Sept 1945. There was no food for 7 months, and Pak Saleh was fed tea (air teh) instead of milk.
