Haji Mohammed Saleh (6)

Was Nakhoda Nan Intan a Sufi?

Someone wrote on 18 May 2016 to ask how Nakhoda Nan Intan and Haji Abdul Latiff Tambi were related.

I wrote at my blog in March 2016 that Nakhoda Nan Intan was the grandfather of Haji Abdul Latiff Tambi who was an Islamic scholar from Tengkera, Malacca.

His full namestring is Haji Abdul Latiff bin Haji Nuruddin (@ Tambi) bin Haji Mohamed Salleh (@ Nakhoda Nan Intan).

  • Clan founder: Hj Mohamed Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan
  • Son: Hj Nuruddin @ Hj Tambi
  • Grandson: Hj Abdul Lathif @ Ulama Nusantara
Makawi vs Malakawi:

  • Makawi indicated a person from Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
  • Malakawi in Arabic indicates that the person was from Malacca.
  • The tombstone dated 1333 AH indicated Al Makawi (which is a surname from the Middle East). The tombstone may not be that of Nakhoda Nan Intan as he was from Istana Pagaruyung in West Sumatra.

Indian vs Minangkabau Malay:

  • Haji Abdul Latiff bin Haji Thamby was said to be of Indian descent while Nakhoda Nan Intan was from West Sumatera, Dutch Indonesia.

Sufism

  • Nakhoda Nan Intan was a Sufi.
  • Do you know which Tariqat order he practiced?
  • From what I know, our clan follows Nasqbandiyah Sufi path

Q. Is there any info on how Haji Abdul Latiff is related to Nakhoda Nan Intan who is buried in Batu Uban Mosque in Penang?

  • Haji Abdul Latiff is the grandson of Nakhoda Nan Intan
  • Haji Abdul Latiff is Haji Abdul Latiff bin Haji Nuruddin bin Hj Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan
  • Hj Nuruddin is the only son from Nakhoda Nan Intan's Malacca wife - Sa'odah
  • Sa'odah had only 1 child -  a son named Hj Nuruddin @ Hj Tambi.
  • The call name Haji Tambi was more popularly used throughout his life, and his children were known as anak Hj Tambi instead of his real name.

Nakhoda Nan Intan's grave
Tok Chu's wife (Prof Ahmad Murad Merican's mother) said Nakhoda's grave is at the Arab graves in Kampung Melayu Batu Uban, in the graveyard by the mosque. I didn't recognise the Nakhoda's grave when I went there with my family. There were many graves and I didn't know those buried there.

Haji Mohammed Saleh (5)

These are the names of the Batu Uban people and their call names:
  • Haji Mohammed Saleh (Nakhoda Nan Intan)
  • Zaitun bt Haji Mohammed Saleh (anak perempuan Nakhoda Nan Intan)
  • Sheikh Ahmad Makawi (menantu Nakhoda Nan Intan, suami Zaitun, orang Arab Makkah)
  • Sheikh  Mohammed Salleh Al Makawi (cucu Nakhoda Nan Intan, anak Zaitun)
  • Sheikh Ahmad Khidir bin Sheikh Salleh Al Makawi (cicit Nakhoda Nan Intan, cucu Zaitun)

Graves of Nakhoda Nan Intan, his grandson and great-grandson
Tanah Perkuburan Masjid Jamek Batu Uban, Penang

Tok Chu mentioned that the grave of Nakhoda Nan Intan is at Masjid Batu Uban, where many Arabs are buried.

We visited Masjid Batu Uban and looked around the associated graveyard to locate the grave of Nakhoda Nan Intan.

In my first visit to the masjid and cemetery, I was uncertain which one was the grave of Nakhoda Nan Intan. There were 3 interesting graves - 2 under the big banyan tree and 1 inside the masjid.

There is a demolished makam (shrine) at the foot of a big overgrown banyan tree. Within the crumbled walls of the makam are 2 male graves, with very different gravestones/headstones (batu nisan yang berbeza). One headstone had inscriptions and the other had embossed inscriptions. I can make out the inscriptions on one of the headstones, but not the other.

Makam outside ... under the big banyan tree:

Aerial roots covering the entire remaining walls of the makam. Makam viewed from Masjid Batu Uban. Go around the tree to the other side to view the two graves in the makam.

HAJI MOHAMMED SALEH @ NAKHODA NAN INTAN
(putera raja, nakhoda bahtera, warak, ulama', imam, peneroka,
orang pertama yang membuka Pulau Pinang sebelum Inggeris)

Ancient headstones on Penang (island) were mostly big wooden ones, as present at the Perak Road cemetery.

Most clergy do not have their name on their headstone. They remain anonymous in unnamed graves in order to avoid an activity called puja kubur - as happened for ages to the graves at Pulau Besar in Malacca, Straits of Malacca.

However, knowledge of the location of Nakhoda Nan Intan's grave is good to know. There is a practice of the Sufi, called Tawassul, where prayers are made at the grave of pious men.

It is difficult to decipher the inscriptions on this headstone. This is MOST POSSIBLY Nakhoda Nan Intan's new headstone since it has no name, whereas the other one has a name and date, and belongs to his grandson - Sheikh Muhammad Salleh Al-Makawi; his father is Sheikh Ahmad Makawi, an Arab from Makkah.

Left headstone says "Al-Fatihah. Sheikh Muhammad Salleh ibni Sheikh Ahmad Makawi who passed away on Friday, 5 Jamadil Awal 1333 Hijrah". The last digit for the year is unclear. This date points to approximately 1912 - quite recent.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

GREAT-GRANDSON

There is one grave which is situated inside the masjid. The name and date do not show that they are of Nakhoda Nan Intan or belong to his time, even though we were told it is Nakhoda Nan Intan's grave. It is NOT. It is the grave of his great-grandson, Sheikh Ahmad Khidir Sheikh Salleh Al-Makawi, dated to 1921 AD. This recent date does not point to Nakhoda Nan Intan. Sheikh Ahmad Khidir bin Sheik Muhammad Salleh Al-Makawi is the great-grandson of Haji Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan.

Great-grandson
Makam cicit Nakhoda Nan Intan

This is the grave of the great-grandson of Haji Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan. His name is Sheikh Ahmad Khidir bin Sheikh Muhammad Salleh bin Sheikh Ahmad Makawi. Makawi in the name suffix implies that Sheikh Ahmad Makawi was an Arab from Makkah, Saudi Arabia. He married Nakhoda Nan Intan's daughter, Zaitun bt Haji Muhammad Saleh.

Close-up of the headstone. The Jawi inscription reads: Al-Fatihah. Sheikh Ahmad Khidir Sheikh Salleh Al-Makawi kembali ke rahmatullah pada hari Isnin, 22 Jamadil Akhir 1321 Hijrah (1321 Hijrah is 1900 AD).

Sheikh Ahmad Khidir Sheikh Salleh Al-Makawi's tomb is inside the room with broken window panes. Haji Tahir is walking pasi it. He is AJK Masjid Jamek Batu Uban.

Tracing the descendants of Nakhoda Nan Intan in Tranquera, Malacca

Faridah Abdul Rashid
Encik Ismail bin Hamid, Secretary of JK Masjid Tranquera called and asked about Nakhoda Nan Intan. Nakhoda Nan Intan had built Masjid Tengkera in 1728, much earlier than Masjid Batu Uban in Penang which was built in 1734. His descendants today are concentrated near Masjid Tengkera, however, they are Indians. Muzium Melaka wants the history of Masjid Tengkera. I can only provide what I know. Do you know? Can you help? My blog is at 262 Banda Hilir.

  • Ayah Wan Merican Noordin Try and contact Khairuddin Shah of Shah Motel. I believe he would know about this. Also, you can contact Mohd. Thurai Abdullah, who is the manager of Maybank HQ. He is from there.

Faridah Abdul Rashid Shah Motel where?

Ayah Wan Merican Noordin Khairuddin Shah maybe at Shah Motel, Petaling Jaya. There is also a Shah Motel in Melaka, and apparently he is from Melaka. His uncle was the Ketua Kampong there.

    Assalamu'alaikum,

I obtained your name from Ayah Wan Merican Noordin in my Facebook.
I'm tracing a few people and stories about them.
I'm writing to ask whether you would know about the following:

    1. Nakhoda Nan Intan and his families
    2. Makam Shabuddin in Tranquerah
    3. Dato HM Shah's family

Encik Ismail bin Hamid, Secretary of JK Masjid Tranquera called me earlier today (11 June 2013) to ask re Nakhoda nan Intan. I am a 10th generation of descendants from Nakhoda Nan Intan from my late father's side who was from Banda Hilir, Malacca. My father also had family ties to Dato HM Shah's family. My father mentioned there is a Makam Shahbuddin in Tranquerah. Would you happen to know about any of the above? This is my blog on this matter: http://262bandahilir.blogspot.com/

Haji Muhammad Salleh (3)

Haji Muhammad Salleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan bin Nan Tunku Patis Sebatang

Full name: Haji Muhammad Salleh bin Nan Tunku Patis Sebatang
Call name: Tuan Haji Muhammad Salleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan
His father: "Nan Tunku Betis Sabatang" was an inherited title and means revered or 'yang dimuliakan' in Bahasa Minangkabau, according to Nasir - a descendant of Nakhoda Nan Intan, who spoke at the 7th Dato Jenaton Family Reunion at INTEKMA Shah Alam on 27 November 2016.
His mother: __
Sibs: __

Residence: Istana Besar Pagar Ruyung (Istano Basa Pagaruyung)
Village: Kampong Buadi (Kampong Bodi)
District: Paya Kumboh (Payakumbuh)
Province: West Sumatra
Country: Indonesia
Time period: 1600-1700 AD, before the original and second Pagaruyung palace burnt down for good.

WHO WAS NAKHODA NAN INTAN?

He was descended from Dato' Pepatih nan Sebatang who lived in the village named Kampong Bodi, in the district of Payakumbuh in the highlands of West Sumatra.

On record and from family tree charts, he married 3 wives:
1. Suripadi from Payakumbuh ......... a lady in Payakumbuh
2. Che Aminah Deli ......................... a lady in Deli
3. Che Aishah (Che Tunggal) .......... a lady in Penang (island)

In reality, he married more than 3 wives. However, only 3 wives are known, minus the wife he married in Tengkera, Malacca, before coming to Penang. His descendants in Tengkera are alive today. One of his grandsons, Haji Abdul Latiff Tambi @ Ulama' Nusantara, married his last wife (Bi bt Abdullah) in Penang. Whether he had married a lady in Singapore before coming to Malacca, is yes, since we have his descendants today. Whether any of his wives died before he married another wife, is unknown. Whether he divorced any previous wife before remarriage is unknown.

He had lived in Singapore. Singapore sage Habib Noh Alhabshi lived many years after Nakhoda Nan Intan had passed away at Batu Uban, Penang. They may not have met, or another man by a similar name could have met and became friends with Alhabshi. Alhabshi or Habshah implies the place of origin as Ethiopia.

(٠‎ - ١‎ - ٢‎ - ٣‎ - ٤‎ - ٥‎ - ٦‎ - ٧‎ - ٨‎ - ٩‎)

THE STORY ABOUT NAKHODA'S ARRIVAL IN PENANG

He migrated from Payakumbuh in the interior to Batu Bara on the east coast of Sumatra. He married in Deli. He then sailed across the Straits of Malacca and arrived in Singapore. He settled in Singapore. He then moved to Malacca. He married in Tengkera, Malacca. He then sailed past Perak, and finally reached Penang. He settled in Batu Uban, where a Malay village started - Kampung Batu Uban.

He was an alim (singular of ulama') and was devoted to the masjid. He built Masjid Batu Uban in Penang in 1734.

Many clergymen from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Makkah, and Baghdad came to his masjid and village in Penang. Intermarriages took place with his descendants and the other migrant families.

He arrived in Penang well before Captain Francis Light arrived in Penang in 1789. Captain Francis Light arrived at the northern tip near North Bay, at Tanjung Penaga - a cape named after a fragrant flowering tree that grew in abundance at the cape. It is still known as Tanjung or Tanjung Penaga today. Tanjung refers to George Town, the city centre.

He served as imam Masjid Batu Uban till he died. He is interred under a gigantic banyan tree. The gigantic tree with roots trailing all over and covered his grave, and damaged its walls and columns. His grave is located in the middle of the crumbled makam. Another more recent grave lies to the left of his grave.

He built Masjid Batu Uban, the oldest masjid in Penang and second oldest after Masjid Kampung Laut in Kelantan. Masjid Kampung Laut was shifted from Tumpat to Nilam Puri to avoid land erosion and losing the masjid altogether. Masjid Batu Uban is at its original site, by the sea previously, but now after land reclamation, it is quite far from the sea. Two highways separate the renovated Masjid Jamek Batu Uban from the seashore.

Before land reclamation, the sea was near the masjid. Every time the tide was high, it came up to the rear well which had to be covered. The well only has 2 keret, and is 2-keret deep. Each keret is a concrete ring measuring approximately 2 feet tall. So the well is about 4 feet deep and is full of water. Even though the well is by the sea, it contains freshwater and does not smell of chlorine or seawater. The water from the well is softwater and is very light to the touch. An electric pump helps to pump water from the ancient well to the small ablution pool in front (by the road side).

An ancient well belonging to Masjid Jamek Batu Uban, Penang. The wellwater is used for ablution.

Tourism Malaysia Information

This text below is taken from the Tourism Malaysia plaque at Masjid Jamek Batu Uban in Pulau Pinang. I have not been to the mosque itself nor seen the plaque myself, but the stories I have heard about Nahkoda Nan Intan and his colleague/relative/brother-in-law Dato' Jenaton, were from my own father Haji Abdul Rashid bin Mohd Yusope (as the 9th generation of Nakhoda Nan Intan), my paternal blood uncle arwah Prof. Syed Mohsin bin Syed Sahil Jamalullail, my paternal aunt Inchek Bedah bt Mohd Yusope, my paternal grandmother Esah/Nenek Inchek/Hjh Aishah bt Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Chow Kit/Mat Amin Pasar who married my paternal grandfather Mohd Yusope bin Haji Mohd Sharif (8th and 7th generation of Nakhoda), and many others.

I read the book Sejarah Awal Pulau Pinang (edited by Prof. Muhammad Haji Salleh, Tokoh Negarawan, published by USM, 2008) after my families and relatives narrated the stories of Nahkoda Nan Intan and Datuk Jenaton to me. Their stories all matched exactly. The stories are correct - factually and historically.

My post on Walid in this blog also shows Nakhoda Nan Intan/Hj Mohammed Saleh as the founder of our Minangkabau clan. He was also the clan founder at 3 settlements - in Penang, Malacca and Singapore.

This blog therefore provides a clear history of Nahkoda Nan Intan (a friend/relative/brother-in-law of Dato' Jenaton) and his descendants. I therefore provided some evidence that Nakhoda Nan Intan (and later, Dato' Jenaton) were the first settlers in Penang circa early 1700. Nakhoda Nan Intan was the founder of the three Malay-Arab settlements in Penang, Malacca and Singapore, well before Captain Francis Light arrived in Penang, and during the time the Dutch ruled Malacca, and before Stamford Raffles came to take Singapore island. This is the real history of the 3 Straits Settlements that the European colonials in Malaya and Singapore tried to hide. This is the real history of the 3 Straits Settlements. (Faridah Abdul Rashid, 22 May 2012)

View Larger Map Payakumbuh in West Sumatra (Sumatera Barat)

View Larger Map Batu Uban in Gelugor in Penang
