Inchek Nyonia binte Tuan Sheik Mohamad Sahabudin



I received a softcopy of Haji Mohamad Sharif's Will (Wasiat Tok Moyang Haji Mohd Sharif) on 29 April 2012 from Abang Sharif, who in turn obtained it from Farid, who in turn obtained it from Bapak. Here are some interesting names mentioned in the Will.

Wife: Fatimah bte Mohamad (this is Patma)
Mother: Inchek Nyonia binte Tuan Sheik Mohamad Sahabudin (this is Tok Moyang Haji Mohd Sharif's mother)

ABOUT MOYANG (gg-grandmother) INCHEK NYONIA
  1. Is Inchek Nyonia binte Tuan Sheik Mohamad Sahabudin the daughter of Datuk Shahbudin bin Mohd Amin (Cirebon)? No, I don't think so. The surnames are spelled differently. Datuk Shahbudin was from Cirebon, Java in Indonesia, while Inchek Nyonia's family was from Tengkera.
  2. Is Inche Nyonia binte Tuan Sheik Mohamad Sahabudin related to Dato Shamsudin bin Dato Haron (Arom, Aroom)? No, they are from different places -  Dato Shamsudin bin Dato Haron was connected to Masjid Kg Hulu, while Inche Nyonia's family was from Tengkera.
  3. When did Yemeni Penangite Ismail marry Inchek Nyonia binte Tuan Sheik Mohamad Shahbudin? No marriage record or date is known.   • Haji Mohd Nordin bin Ismail (Tok moyang Haji Mohd Nordin, born c1871 - died 1949/1950) .... middle brother. He was still alive in 1948 - there is a family group photo at Pulau Besar after the war, along with Walid (his nephew). Walid died in early 1954 before Bapak returned from Kirkby, England.
  • Zainal bin Ismail (Tok moyang Zenal in Klang, born c1872 - died c1965) .... youngest brother. We visited him at home in Klang on Hari Raya Aidilfitri when I was a big girl.

  2. Tok Zainal was left to look after his mother while Tok moyang Hj Mohd Sharif and Tok moyang Hj Mohd Noordin went for Hajj and returned in 1897.
  3. In Tok moyang Hj Mohd Sharif's Will is stated his father's name: Ismail bin Khatib Yusof.
    This means that his father was still alive in 1897, when he returned from Hajj.

  1. The Will of Haji Mohd Sharif is dated 1 March 1906 and the probate is dated 1912.
  2. If we take 1912 as the possible date of death of Hj Mohd Sharif and take 1870 as his birth date, he was about age 26 when he went for the Hajj in 1896 when his eldest son was born, and aged 42 (or less) when he passed away (ie he died young).
Conclusion:
  1. How old was Tok moyang Hj Mohd Sharif when he died? No death certificate and date is known. His Will (Wasiat) was dated 1 March 1906.

  2. When did she live?
Conclusion:
  1. Malay women often got married at age 12 or 13 in the olden days, ie after they had their first menses (menarche).
  2. Tok Mohd Yusope bin Hj Mohd Sharif was born on 11 February 1896. 
  3. His mother Patma's 1st day of LMP was 7 May 1895. 
  4. Patma must have missed her period on 4 June 1895.
  5. Patma could have married on 1 May 1895 - she was possibly 12+ going on 13 years old when she married and had her first menses.
  6. Patma was possibly born 12, 13 or 14 years before 1896.

  8. Her husband Mohd Sharif was around at home in Banda Hilir in the week of 7 May 1895 when Patma became pregnant. He then left for Hajj after 4 June 1895, after his wife Patma missed her period and was confirmed pregnant with their first baby.

  1. Tok moyang Zenal therefore served Sultan Abdul Samad when he (Tok moyang Zenal) was very young - possibly aged 25 in 1896 (ie last 2 years before Sultan Abdul Samad passed away). 
  2. Then after Sultan Abdul Samad passed away, what did Tok moyang Zenal do or whom did he work for?

ABOUT SULTAN ABDUL SAMAD

Use Sultan Abdul Samad as guide to find the times Tok moyang Zenal had lived.
  • Sultan Abdul Samad was born in 1804 at Bukit Melawati in Selangor.
  • Sultan Abdul Samad reigned for 41 years, 6 January 1857 - 6 February 1898 (aged 53 to 94)
  • Sultan Abdul Samad died on  6 February 1898 at Jugra in Selangor. Jugra was the royal town where Istana Jugra was located.

  • Tok Zenal registered the birth of his nephew as the other 2 brothers (Hj Mohd Sharif & Hj Mohd Nordin) were away in Makkah performing the Hajj.

Conclusion:
  1. Sultan Abdul Samad of Selangor reigned from 6 January 1857 to 6 February 1898. 
  2. Tok moyang Zenal of Klang was a private tutor to Sultan Abdul Samad for (possibly) the last 2 years of the Sultan's life, 1896-1898.
  3. Tok moyang Zenal could have served Sultan Abdul Samad a bit prior to 1896 till 1898 (when the Sultan died).

Conclusion:
  1. Sultan Abdul Samad passed away AFTER the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in KL was completed. 
  2. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building was completed in 1897; Sultan Abdul Samad died in 1898.

Conclusion:
      1. Tok moyang Zenal registered the birth of Tok Mohd Yusope bin Hj Mohd Sharif in 1896. 
      2. Did Tok moyang Zenal work in Klang and quickly returned to Malacca just to register his nephew's birth? Or, did he go to work in Klang after his nephew was born? Maybe after his nephew was born. Maybe after Fatimah's maternal confinement - sometime in early May 1896.
      3. Tok Mohd Yusope bin Hj Mohd Sharif was born on 11 February 1896 in Banda Hilir, Malacca.
      4. Tok moyang Hj Mohd Sharif bin Ismail went to Makkah in 1895/1896 before his eldest son was born and returned from Makkah in 1896/1897, after his eldest child/son was born.

      Conclusion:
      1. How old was Tok moyang Zenal when he died? No record or date is known.
      2. If he was born in 1872, he was at least 24 when he registered his nephew's birth in 1896 and went to work for Sultan Abdul Samad in Klang.
      3. Tok moyang Zainal was the youngest of 3 brothers.
      4. Tok moyang Zenal was possibly born in 1872 and was 24 when his nephew was born, and went to work for Sultan Abdul Samad in Klang.
