TUNKU SAYYID HUSSAIN AL-AIDID (PENANG)

Tunku Sayyid Hussain Al-Aidid originated from the palace in Aceh. He was a grandson of the ruling Sultan Aceh.

He migrated from Aceh to Penang in 1791 when Captain Francis Light invited him. Francis Light noted that Tunku Sayyid Hussain Al-Aidid was a wealthy trader from Aceh.

Tunku Sayyid Hussain Al-Aidid arrived in Penang with his entourage of relatives, followers and servants. They resettled at Acheen Street in George Town. Tunku Sayyid Hussain Al-Aidid's residence was at Acheen Street, George Town.

His masjid was at Acheen Street in George Town, named Masjid Melayu Aceh, built in 1806, after Masjid Kapital Keling was built in 1802. The masjid is low and single storey with wrap around verandah and a large pool for ablution.

He was a wealthy diamond trader in Penang. Business bloomed in the area. The Hajj business also developed at Acheen street.

Tunku Sayyid Hussain Al-Aidid married and had issue, sons and daughters.

He died in 1840. The founder's tomb is at the right end of the masjid (Makam Syed Hussien). His tomb is adjacent to the masjid. His wife is buried next to him. His original tomb was a long one, but is just a square tomb today.

On the grounds of the masjid are a few Malay-styled wooden homes and more recent brick rental units. The imam's house is still extant.

ISMAIL JAILANI (PERMATANG BERAH, PENANG)

Ismail Jailani was from Permatang Berah in Province Wellesley (now Seberang Perai) on the mainland.

Ami Latiff bin Abdul Aziz Al Yamani (Kulim, Kedah) may have some information about Ismail Jailani but has forgotten much unformation.

Further details about him are unknown.

Ismail Jailani married 2 wives at 2 places, first in Penang and second in Malacca.

Ismail Jailani had first married a lady in Penang, and had a daughter, Siti Hawa bt Ismail Jailani (Hawa Jailani). The marriage to Inche Nyonia was Ismail's second marriage, and had three sons-Haji Mohd Sharif, Haji Noordin, and Zainal (Zenal) bin Ismail.

Ismail Jailani married twice:
  • m1. Unknown (lady in Penang) - mother of Siti Hawa bt Ismail Jailani)
  • m2. Inche Nyonia bt Tuan Sheikh Mohd Sahabudin (asal Tengkera, Melaka) - mother of Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail, Haji Noordin bin Ismail, and Zainal (Zenal) bin Ismail
-------------------------------------------------------------------
SHAIK MOHAMAD BIN SHAIK SALEM AL YAMANI

Shaik Mohamad bin Salem Alyamani married Siti Hawa bt Ismail Jailani (Hawa Jailani) and had issue, one daughter - Pahmah.

Siti Hawa's daughter is Fatma bt Shaik Mohamad. Fatma bt Shaik Mohamad was known as Patma, or written only as Pahmah on her son's birth certificate (Mohd Usuf @ Yusope bin Haji Mohd Sharif). Bapak described Pahmah as 'putih macam Cina'.

No record. No history. No photos.

Oral accounts said Shaik Mohamad bin Salem Alyamani was an Arab from Yemen (orang Arab dari Yaman).

-------------------------------------------------------------------
SITI HAWA BT ISMAIL JAILANI / SITI HAWA JAILANI/ HAWA JAILANI

There are a few accounts (different versions) of Siti Hawa and her children.

Siti Hawa v.1

Siti Hawa had 7 children:
  1. Siti Saedah (Zubaidah)
  2. Shaik Omar
  3. Abdul Aziz (Ami Aziz Alyamani)
  4. Siti Mariah
  5. Siti Kechil
  6. Siti Hajar
  7. Ismail
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Siti Hawa v.2

I asked Tok Kalthom for Ami Aziz Alyamani's siblings. I also asked her about Fatma Alyamani. She said Fatma was higher up than Ami Aziz Alyamani in the family tree.

From Umi Kalthom bt Mohd Yunus @ Wan Teh (5 June 2013):

Ami Aziz Alyamani's siblings:
  1. Siti Zubaidah (sulung/eldest)
  2. Sk. Omar
  3. Abdul Aziz Al-Yamani (this is Ami Aziz Alyamani)
  4. Siti Mariam
  5. Ismail
  6. Siti Kechik
  7. Siti Hajar
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Siti Hawa v.3

From Ami Latiff bin Abdul Aziz Al Yamani (Kulim, Kedah, 2018):
Siti Hawa was the mother of Ami Aziz Al Yamani.
Siti Hawa was his father's mother.
Siti Hawa was his grandmother.

Siti Hawa had 7 children:
  1. Siti Zubaidah (sulung/eldest)
  2. Sk. Omar
  3. Abdul Aziz Al-Yamani (this is Ami Aziz Alyamani)
  4. Siti Mariam
  5. Ismail
  6. Patma (this is Bapak punya nenek)
  7. Siti Hajar (Bapak said Siti Hajar was Ami Ismail's second wife, when Bapak went to ask him for some money to go to England, circa 1951)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
ISMAIL BIN ABDUL AZIZ AL YAMANI (JELUTONG)

Ismail bin Abdul Aziz Al Yamani was known as Ami Ismail Al Yamani. He was a jeweller at Masjid Kapitan Keling area in Penang. He married Maimunah bt Zainal (Nya Intan) of Klang (anak Tok Zainal of Klang). Nya Intan's son is Zainal Abidin bin Ismail Al Yamani in Shah Alam.

Tok Zainal is the youngest of 3 brothers in Malacca - Haji Mohd Sharif (Banda Hilir), Haji Noordin (Ujong Pasir) and Zainal/Zenal (Klang). Haji Mohd Sharif and Haji Noordin were Imam Masjid Banda Hilir, Melaka. Zainal/Zenal worked as a private tutor to Sultan Abdul Samad in Klang. He was known as Tok Zainal Klang.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
INCHE NYONIA BT TUAN SHEIKH MOHD SAHABUDIN

Inche Nyonia bt Tuan Sheikh Sahabudin was from Tengkera, Melaka (Bapak beritahu).

There were 2 men whose names were almost similar. Both names could be the same man, whose name was spelt differently in different accounts. One man is named Shahbudin and another man is named Sahabudin.

Therefore, Inche Nyonia could be the daughter of either man (or the same man but named differently in different accounts).

She could be the daughter of Maulana Sheikh Shahbudin Alyamani (an Indian Muslim) from Tengkera. She could be the daughter of Dato Shahbuddin bin Haji Mohd Amin of Kadilangu, Cirebon, Java, Dutch Indonesia. Both men were clergies.

There is Makam Shahbudin Al Yamani in Tengkera (Bapak beritahu), but I could not locate this makam in Tengkera.

Inche Nyonia had 3 sons with Ismail Jailani:
  1. Haji Mohd Sharif (eldest brother, he lived in Banda Hilir)
  2. Haji Noordin (middle brother, he lived in Ujong Pasir)
  3. Zainal@Zenal (youngest brother, he lived in Klang)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
V1. TUAN SHEIKH MOHD SAHABUDIN (asal Tengkera)
V2. DATO' SHAHBUDDIN BIN HAJI MOHD AMIN (asal Cirebon, Jawa)

Tuan Sheikh Mohd Sahabudin could be Dato' Shahbuddin bin Haji Mohd Amin, asal Cirebon, Jawa, Dutch Indonesia.

Dato Shahbuddin bin Haji Mohd Amin (asal Cirebon) was a Javanese Sufi master from Cirebon in Java, Dutch Indonesia.
He was descended from Keturunan Sunan Gunung Jati (Sharif Hidayatullah), one of the well-known Wali Songo.

Cari keturunan Dato Shahbudin bin Haji Mohd Amin (asal Cirebon). Makamnya di Kubor Jalan/Lorong Panjang, Banda Hilir, Melaka.

Dia keturunan Sunan Gunung Jati (Sharif Hidayatullah). The links are unclear.

[Misinformation from Moin anak Pak Ji Usop Semabok. According to him, Dato' Shahbddin's daughter, Fatimah, married to ISMAIL ALYAMANI.]

Dato' Shahbuddin bin Haji Mohd Amin's daughter is Inche Nyonia bt Tuan Sheikh Mohd Sahabudin, who married to Ismail Jailani. Fatimah married to Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail Jailani,

-------------------------------------------------------------------
FATMA BT SHAIK MOHAMAD (PAHMAH)

Fatma (Pahmah) mother is Siti Hawa bt Ismail Jailani, also referred to as Hawa Jailani.

Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail married Fatma bt Shaik Mohamad. She was known as Pahmah, as written on her son's birth certificate of 1896.

Pahmah was from Tengkera. She came to live in Banda Hilir when she married to Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail. Pahmah's father was Shaik Mohamad bin Salem Al Yamani, who was an Arab from Yemen (Arab dari Yaman). Pahmah's mother is Siti Hawa bt Ismail Jailani (she was known as Hawa Jailani) - the same mother as Abdul Aziz bin Shaikh Mohamad Al Yamani (Ami Aziz Alyamani). Pahmah had 6 other siblings in Penang.

There are no birth certificates of Pahmah's 5 children except that of her eldest and only son, Mohd Usuf @ Mohd Yusope bin Haji Mohd Sharif.

Pahmah had 5 children in Banda Hilir:
  1. Mohd Yusope bin Haji Mohd Sharif (Tok Usop or HMY; born 11 February 1896-died 4 January 1954)
  2. Amnah bt Haji Mohd Sharif (born c.1898-died c.1967; married to Haji Ahmad bin Haji Abdul Lathif (HABHAL) c.1927 as his first wife and went to live in Singapore)
  3. Mahani (Nek Ani, born c.1900-died c.1984)
  4. Alijah (Nek Jah, born c.1902-died 1965)
  5. Asiah (Nek Ya, born c.1904-died 28 April 1984)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
MOHD YUSOPE BIN HJ MOHD SHARIF (WALID)
b.11.02.1896-d.04.01.1954

Mohd Usuf bin Hj Mohd Sharif was born on 11 February 1896 at home in his grandfather's house at 262-T Kg Banda Hilir, Malacca. His father was away performing the Hajj at the time of his birth and his youngest uncle (Zenal or Zainal bin Ismail) registered his homebirth. A new house was built after his father returned from the Hajj.

Mohd Yusope was an active young man. He was in the volunteer army. He was a sharp shooter. There are notes about him being in the volunteer army in Malacca.  There is a photo of  him as a volunteer. Almost all his children have this photo of him in their homes. It is said that Mak Nya resembled her father most.

Mohd Yusope bin Haji Mohd Sharif married Aishah bt Mohd Amin in Kg Baru, KL (c.May 1920; calculated 5-20 May 1920).

There is no wedding certificate of their wedding. There are no wedding photos. Their wedding should have been conducted at her father's home at 10 Jalan Stony in Kg Baru, KL, or Masjid Kg Baru, KL, and registered at the Muslim marriages office in Kuala Lumpur. It is reported that the girls of the Kampong Bahru Malay Girls' vernacular school, Kuala Lumpur, assembled at the school compound on May 24th. to celebrate the Empire Day. The Lady supervisor of the Malay vernacular girls' school and her assistant, Inche Mohamed Yusope, Assistant Inspector of Schools, Mr. Haji Mohamed Sidin, Malay visiting teacher, and a large number of the parents and other relations of the girls were present at the function. He took a flight home but his aeroplane had technical difficulties and made a pit stop at Cuentas, Spain, for 4 hours. MOHD AMIN HASSAN LONG

Mohd Amin's parents are unknown, as he was adopted.

Mohd Amin was a foster son of Hassan bin Long (Dr Fairuz Ashikin beritahu).

Mohd Amin was a respected Javanese man who opened Kg Baru, KL.

Mohd Amin of Kg Baru, KL, was of Javanese extraction (keturunan Jawa)(Dr Fairuz Ashikin beritahu).

Mohd Amin was the founder of Kg Baru, KL, under Police Commissioner Henry C. Syers (ikut cerita Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid bin Ismail @ Wak Majid).

Mohd Amin worked as a Market Supervisor at Chow Kit market in KL, ie Penguasa Pasar Chow Kit di KL (ikut cerita kaum keluarga besar di Melaka dan di Kg Baru, KL).

Mohd Amin donated his land for Masjid Kg Baru, KL (Pak Mat beritahu). But wealthy Haji Bachik (saudara Bapak di Bukit Cina, Melaka) donated funds for building the masjid. So Mohd Amin (Kg Baru, KL) and Haji Bachik (Bukit Cina, Melaka) should have known each other when they donated to build Masjid Kg Baru in KL.

Like Haji Bachik, Mohd Amin married 4 wives and had 19 children (see other postings on Mohd Amin and Haji Bachik).

Mohd Amin's daughter is Aishah bt Mohd Amin (Nenek Inche @ Bik Esah), who married to Mohd Yusope bin Haji Md Sharif.

Mohd Amin died in 1936. Bapak said Bapak fell down and hurt his chin or forehead the day when Mohd Amin died. Bapak should have met Mohd Amin in Kg Baru since he was a little boy and lived at Imbi Road, KL. Maybe he could not remember his grandfather.

MAKAM DI TENGKERA, MELAKA

There are a few makams in Tengkera. Many have visited and know the exact location of the graveyard in Tengkera. I have not been to this particular graveyard.

The Makam is located in Tengkera, in a narrow lane (Jalan Siantan 2/3 A) to the right of Masjid Tengkera. Go down that road, past Kubur Syed Idrus (a large burial ground on the right). Just after Kubur Syed Idrus is a small burial plot belonging to Haji Tambi, Haji Abdul Latiff and their descendants. The graveyard entrance gate maybe locked. You can contact the caretakers before your visit.

Makam location: Jalan Siantan 2/3 A, Taman Siantan Puri, Tengkera, Melaka

Walk from Masjid Tengkera to the junction of Jalan Siantan 2/3 A.

Follow Jalan Sintan 2/3 A, past Perkuburan Syed Idrus. The Makam is 5 minutes' drive from Masjid Tengkera.

MAHANI BT HJ MOHD SHARIF (BANDA HILIR, MELAKA)

She was called Nek Ani. She lived in Banda Hilir all her life.

Mahani is Nek Ani, who taught Quran at Banda Hilir to Ayah Wan Merican Noordin (cousin Baizura, Mastura, Shawaluddin & Kamarul Akhir) and my sibs Abang Sharif and Kak Sharifah (Pah). I did not mengaji Quran from Nek Ani when small.

ALIJAH BT HJ MOHD SHARIF (BANDA HILIR, MELAKA)

Alijah is Nek Jah. She was mentally incapacitated, but I liked her very much. She reared 16 cats in a big cage made just for her cats. I played with all her cats.

She was still strong in her old age (70s). She would go to the market and return safely by herself.

ASIAH BT HJ MOHD SHARIF (BANDA HILIR, MELAKA)

Asiah is Nek Ya. She married to Hj Ibrahim, a mamak businessman, and they lived in Tampin. Thus, she was also known as Nek Ya Tampin.

Hj Ibrahim had a provision shop (kedai runcit) in Tampin. We visited Hj Ibrahim in Tampin and took the train back home.

Nek Ya returned to Banda Hilir after her husband died. Her house is next to Mak Sarah's house. Both houses are still extant.

Nek Ya had no children with Hj Ibrahim, but adopted an Indian boy.

Nek Ya also taught Quran at Banda Hilir (she assisted Nek Ani).

Bapak recorded Nek Ya's demise in his diary.

Merdeka was first proclaimed at Padang Banda Hilir, Melaka in 1956, before it was repeated in Selangor on 31 August 1957. I do not have any photos of this event.

Hj Khalil married more than once. He had a few children (4 girls and a son?) - in no order:

2. Hjh Mahani (Ende)
3. girl

Zain's elder brother had worked in the Land & Mines Dept in KL, and was the boss of Hj Shapri bin Nasir (anak Nenek Jenab, adik Nek Inche').
