Haji Muhammad Saleh (7)

Update on Nakhoda Nan Intan & families
  • 5 Wives of Nakhoda Nan Intan
  • Children of Nakhodan Nan Intan
  • Descendants of Nakhoda Nan Intan
  • Family trees on Geni.com

Note: This is collected information from many sources, interviews and discussions among relatives. Some evidences are disjointed.

This is what I have managed to put together from all the information that I have received so far. Some dates, birthplaces, places of demise and graves/graveyard information are still missing. There are still a lot of gaps here and there, as I get information bit-by-bit, and not all at once. Some pieces of information are disjointed, some can't quite fit in as the dates are disparate and so large a difference. It is not so easy to check and verify a lot of things as there are no official documents such as birth certificate, death certificate, land title/entitlement, Will (wasiat), estate documents, schools, occupation records, home addresses, etc. So I have put this big document together based on whatever I have for now.

Please remember that the inscriptions on the tombstones and a lot of the documents are in tulisan Jawi and in a calligraphic form which I cannot decipher, but I tried my best. Maybe you can do better at the Jawi name spellings, Jawi letter/documents and Jawi inscriptions on the tombstones. Some tombstone inscriptions have been washed away by the rain ... and  which leaves nothing for me to see except traces of what was there before.

I hope this big document will hold for everyone who is interested in one way or another. I'm just compiling information so that I know who is talking or writing to me, and who are my relatives from my father's side.

My father told me a bit about his people, but he passed away too soon before he could piece together complete information for me. He only managed to scan old B/W photos which I accidentally found in a pendrive on his desk, 2 years after he died. He kept notes and letters of his contacts. So I'm just continuing what my father was trying to do. I hope it helps someone in some way.

BIOGRAPHY OF HJ MUHAMMAD SALEH
@NAKHODA NAN INTAN
==================================

INTRODUCTION

Who was Nakhoda Nan Intan?

He was descended from Dato' Pepatih Nan Sabatang who lived in the village named Kampong Bodi, in the district of Payakumbuh in the highlands of West Sumatra during the time of Dutch-occupied Indonesia.

Tomb
There is a megalithic stone tombstone of Dato' Pepatih Nan Sabatang at a village, not in Penang, but somewhere in the south. I have not seen it.

Migration
Nakhoda Nan Intan is Haji Muhammad Salleh of Istana Pagaruyung in West Sumatra. He came to Singapore and lived in Singapore and the Straits Settlements of Malacca and Penang.

Origin
Why did Nakhoda Nan Intan leave his hometown and country? According to Nenek Kalthom, it didn't have to do with Perang Paderi. The Dutch did not have anything to do with them fleeing the palace. The reason for Nakhoda Nan Intan and others to leave the palace was because of internal conflict concerning cultural traditions that did not follow Islam - the palace people were divided into 2 factions. One faction struggled to follow Islam strictly and the other faction wanted to follow Minangkabau rites and traditions (which is regarded as un-Islamic). The palace was razed to the ground a few times and in the last one, after a lightning strike, the entire palace burnt down into the shape of a charging horse. The Minangkabau-styled old palace was never rebuilt. However, a replica Minangkabau palace was built but solely for tourism purposes.

Region
Hj Muhammad Salleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan originated from Kg Bodi, Payakumbuh in West Sumatra. The area is a highland in the interior of West Sumatra. It is bordered by interesting places - with Padang in the south-west (SW), Pariaman in the north north-east (NNE) and Bukit Tinggi in the near north-east (NE). Padang is famous for Nasi Padang or Nasi Sumatera. Nasi Sumatera is different from Nasi Aceh. He migrated from Payakumbuh in the interior to Batu Bara on the east coast of Sumatra. He married in Deli. In Malay literature, Che Aminah Deli was a wealthy businesswoman connected to the shipping business and Deli was a famous busy seaport.

==============================
5 WIVES OF HJ MUHAMMAD SALEH
@ NAKHODA NAN INTAN
==============================

Haji Muhammad Salleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan married 5 wives at 5 different places. He married in Payakumbuh, Deli, Singapore, Melaka and Penang. He had 11 or 12 children from 4 of his 5 wives. He had 10 sons and a daughter. However, there is one more son, Mohd Noor, whose mother is unknown. If we include Mohd Noor, altogether, Hj Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan could have had 12 children (11 sons and a daughter).

I have arranged his wives as recorded on the family tree chart and based on the 2 mosques that he built at Tengkera and Batu Uban. But still there are questions about the order of their marriages. Check at Geni.com
  • His first wife was the one he married at his hometown before he left his village. She bore him 5 sons.
  • His second wife did not have any issue. There is hardly any information on her.
  • His Penang wife was his third(?) wife. She bore him 1 or 2 children. Her descendants are being traced.
  • His Malacca wife is relatively unknown. She left a great son, an alim (named Tambi) who went by his nickname Hj Tambi. He was relatively unknown by his real name, Hj Nuruddin. Hj Nuruddin's son in turn was the famous Ulamak Nusantara, Hj Abdul Lathif Tambi.
  • His Singapore wife is regarded as the last(?) wife.
  • The exact origin of his wives was not available and not verified as there were no birth certificates in the 1700s and early 1800s. Birth certificates were made compulsory in 1926, in British Malaya.
c. stands for circa and means kira-kira/agak-agak/sekitar/roughly because the exact date/year/time is/was unknown.

The 5 wives of Hj Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan are as follows:
  1. Suripadi/Suraidi dari Payakumbuh, Sumatra, Indonesia (on record she was his first wife from Payakumbuh, Sumatra) .... undated (estimated 1716-6 = 1710) .... c.1710
  2. Che Aminah bt Deli or dari Deli, Sumatra, Indonesia (on record she was his second wife from Deli, Sumatra) ..... undated (estimated 1722-6 = 1716) .... c. 1716. Deli could be her father's name. Deli was her father's name. Deli coastal town has a famous shipping port (like Port Klang).
  3. Jamilah dari Singapura (on record she was his Singapore wife) .... undated (estimated -6 = 1722) .... c.1722
  4. Sa'odah dari Melaka (on record she was his Malacca wife) .... c.1728 (estimated based on when Masjid Tengkera was built)
  5. Che Asiah/Aishah dari Pulau Pinang (on record she was his third and Penang wife. She was known as Che Tunggal) .... c.1734 (estimated based on when Masjid Batu Uban was built)

(A) Deli, Indonesia 1716-1722

Nakhoda Nan Intan was most probably in Deli circa 1716 ... he was possibly 25 years old.

Nakhoda Nan Intan married a wife in Deli, Indonesia. She was known as Che Aminah Deli.

Che Aminah Deli had 5 children with Nakhoda Nan Intan.

In Malay literature, Che Aminah Deli was a successful business woman. Whether this business woman was Nakhoda Nan Intan's wife is unknown. Deli is a famous shipbuilding port. She could be his wife as money was then possibly used for shipbuilding or purchasing ships, which Nakhoda Nan Intan and followers needed to sail away to Tanah Melayu. Deli could also be her father's name.

(B) Singapore 1722-1728

He was a ship's captain (skipper or nakhoda) and sailed to Singapore from Deli, East Sumatra. He sailed across the Straits of Malacca and arrived in Singapore. He settled in Singapore and had family. Nakhoda Nan Intan was most probably in Singapore circa 1722 ... he was possibly 31 years old.

Query: Was he a good friend of Habib Noh Alhabshi of Singapore?
Argument: Habib Noh Alhabshi had lived some 100 years after Nakhoda Nan Intan. So it could be that Habib Noh Alhabshi was a close friend of Nakhoda's family and downline, including his grandson, Hj Abdul Lathif bin Hj Tambi.

Did Haji Muhammad Salleh marry a wife in Singapore? Yes. He married Jamilah circa 1722. Jamilah had 3 sons:
  1. Taha
  2. Sa'id
  3. Abdul Latiff
Taha's son is Abbas. Abbas's daughter is Maliah. Maliah married to _______ bin Habib Noh Alhabshi. Maliah's son is Syed Hassan Alhabshi. Syed Hassan Alhabshi's son is Syed Ahmad Ridhwan Alhabshi (Singapore).

Malik Alhabshi (George Town, Penang) may know more about the Alhabshi lineages in Penang and Singapore. He has the book that has the family trees of these early generations.

(C) Tengkera, Malacca 1728-1734

Hj Muhammad Saleh then moved to Malacca. He lived in Tengkera in Malacca and built Masjid Tengkera in 1728. He married Sa'odah (a Melaka lady) and had a son and 9 grandchildren in Malacca.

Hj Muhammad Saleh's son is Hj Nuruddin bin Hj Muhammad Saleh. Hj Nuruddin was popularly known as Hj Tambi al Malakawi.

Hj Tambi al Malakawi married and had family in Malacca. His wife was unknown. He had 9 children (6 sons and 3 daughters):
  1. Maimunah
  2. Yahya
  3. Hassan
  4. Muhammad
  5. Mahdom (c.1864-c.1931) (female)
  6. Mastan
  7. Khadijah
  8. Ahmad
  9. Abdul Lathif (Ulamak Nusantara; 1872-1939)

Hj Tambi's son is Hj Abdul Latif bin Hj Tambi al Malakawi. His real name is Hj Abdul Latif bin Hj Nuruddin. Hj Abdul Latif bin Hj Tambi al Malakwi was popularly known as Ulamak Nusantara. Hj Abdul Latif bin Hj Nuruddin was born in 1872 in Tanjong Mas, Melaka.

Hj Abdul Latif bin Hj Tambi al Malakawi married 4 wives and had families in Tengkera (Malacca) and Singapore. His first wife was Maryam, who had 7 children. His second wife was Siti Hajar, who had 6 children. His third wife was Neng Chik (according to Azharuddin Kassim and his aunt in Singapore). His fourth wife was Bi bt Abdullah, who had a daughter. Altogether, Hj Abdul Lathif had 15 children (7 sons and 8 daughters).

Hj Abdul Latif's eldest son by his first wife Maryam is Hj Ahmad bin Hj Abdul Lathif or better known as HABHAL. His daughter by his last wife (Bi bt Abdullah) is Hjh Umi Khalthom bt Hj Abdul Lathif (Nenek Aunty/Nenek Chom).

HABHAL set up a soy sauce (kicap) business in Jalan Mangga, Geylang Serai in Singapore. The original place where he made kicap is no more. My parents and I visited the original venue where HABHAL made kicap in Singapore in 1965. It was a small Malay village. The main house was on one side and the workers slept in their quarters, on pangkin kayu. There was a central badminton court and the houses bordered the playing field and badminton court. There were people playing badminton when we arrived one late afternoon. HABHAL ordered his men to stop playing badminton when we arrived. His workers stopped playing badminton and disappeared into their quarters. HABHAL then entertained my parents inside his home.

HABHAL married twice. He first married Hjh Amnah bt Hj Mohd Sharif (Nenek Amnah). Nenek Amnah was from 262-T, Banda Hilir, Malacca. Nenek Amnah was the younger sister of Mohd Yusope bin Haji Mohd Sharif (Walid). Mohd Yusope is my grandfather (Tok Walid). Tok Walid is my father's father (Bapak punya Walid). HABHAL had 7 children with Nenek Amnah. Only 5 of the 7 HABHAL children married and had families. Their children in turn married and had families. Two of HABHAL's sons remained bachelors.

After Nenek Hjh Amnah died in the late 1960s (circa 1967), HABHAL remarried Nenek Hjh Mahani bt Haji Khalil, also a relative. HABHAL did not have any children by his second wife.

According to my classmate Zariyah bt Hj Daud (MGHS 1972 & 1973), who is also a relative of Nenek Hjh Mahani, Nenek Hjh Mahani had 3 other sisters - Salmah, Mahani, __ and __. Salmah married to Majid and sold Majid Sate/Majid Satay in Kg Baru, KL. They became rich and famous. Their son was the late engineer Mohd Salleh Majid, Director of Lands and Mines, KL. Another son was the late Zain Azman, a famous Malay singer in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

Nenek Jenab of Kg Baru, KL had 2 sons - Mohd Shapri and Mohd Yatim. Mohd Shapri bin Nasir @ Pak Cik Hamid knew Mohd Salleh Majid as he had worked under him in the Lands and Mines in KL. Both Mohd Shapri and his younger brother have passed away in 2016.

Hjh Umi Kalthom bt Hj Abdul Lathif (Nenek Aunty/Nenek Chom) married to Tok Hj Jamaluddin bin Hj Ali. They had 6 children - General Tan Sri Muhammad Ismail, Ahmad, Aini, Dr Sabariah Faizah, Datin Sabariah Fauziah, and Hjh Sabariah Faridah. Nenek Aunty/Nenek Chom's children are married and have families.

Hj Tambi's daughter is Hjh Mahdom bt Hj Muhammad Nuruddin. Hjh Mahdom married to Hj Hashim. Their daughter is Fatimah bt Hj Hashim.

Fatimah bt Hj Hashim married to Osman bin Puteh. Their son is Hj Ahmad bin Osman.

Hj Ahmad bin Osman married Zabedah. They have 3 children - Azmi, Maheran and Azlina.

Maheran bt Ahmad remarried to Ustaz Zain Azzra'iy bin Mahat. She has a son from her previous marriage - Adam Almalek Faizel. She follows the Naqsbandiyyah Sufi path.

Maheran has the key to the private burial plot behind Masjid Tengkera, Melaka. The burial plot has the graves of Hj Nuruddin (Hj Tambi), Hj Abdul Lathiff (Ulamak Nusantara), Hj Ahmad (her father), Fatimah (her paternal grandmother) and Osman (her paternal grandfather).

(D) Batu Uban, Penang 1734-1740

THE STORY ABOUT NAKHODA NAN INTAN'S ARRIVAL IN PENANG

Nakhoda Nan Intan then sailed past Perak, and finally reached Penang. He settled in Batu Uban by the beach, facing the mainland.  Initially, his settlement was by the sea. It is known as Kg Batu Uban or Kg Melayu Batu Uban. This became the first Malay village on the island.

Now, after extensive land reclamation, his village is landlocked and his descendants cannot go to sea easily. They have to take the motorcycle to the jetty which is far away. There is no direct path to take from this ancient village to the jetty as previously (walk down to the beach and take the boats out to sea to fish).

He built Masjid Batu Uban in 1734. This is the oldest masjid in Penang. This masjid is similar to Masjid Tengkera in Melaka which he built earlier in 1728. He was an alim (singular of ulama') and was devoted to the masjid. He built Masjid Batu Uban in Penang in 1734. Many clergymen from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Makkah, and Baghdad came to his masjid and village in Penang.

Intermarriages took place between Nakhoda Nan Intan's descendants and the other migrant families, including the Chinese. Kg Batu Uban is a mixed Malay-Arab-Chinese early settlement which grew to become a village.  The descendants here have Malay-Arab-Chinese features and Arab/Malay names.

Nakhoda Nan Intan arrived in Penang well before Captain Francis Light arrived in Penang in 1879. Captain Francis Light arrived at the northern tip near North Bay, at Tanjung Penaga - a cape named after a fragrant flowering tree that grew in abundance at the cape. It is still known as Tanjung or Tanjung Penaga today. Tanjung refers to George Town, the city centre.

Ancient trees in Penang include:
1. Pokok bunga tanjung (Mimusops elengi L)
2. Pokok penaga lilin (Mesua ferrea)
3. Pokok penaga laut or bintagor (Calophyllum inophyllum).

Makawi in the name suffix implies that Sheikh Ahmad Makawi was an Arab from Makkah, Saudi Arabia. He married Nakhoda Nan Intan's only daughter, Zaitun bt Haji Muhammad Saleh.

Zaitun's son is Sheikh Muhammad Salleh al-Makawi bin Sheikh Ahmad Makawi.

==================================
IDENTITY OF HJ MUHAMMAD SALEH @ NAKHODA NAN INTAN
==================================

There is some confusion over the identity of the clan founder, Hj Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan.

We have to be very careful as the name Salleh/Saleh/Soleh/Solih is used repeatedly by many generations.

I have therefore used the full names and call names where possible, in order to avoid confusion of these men who have the same name. My father had also warned me of the names being recycled over many generations and in many families.

For Nakhoda Nan Intan, I have included locations and dates (based on likely 6 years between marriages at different places).

However, dates and ages may/may not tally. These are here only for my research. You may have a better and proper record of the possible dates these men had lived. I don't.

How many men named "Hj Muhammad Saleh" lived between 1687 and 1874 (span of 187 years) in Payakumbuh, Batu Bara, Deli, Singapore, Melaka and Penang? 1, 2, 3, or 4 men?

Which one is the correct Hj Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan?

Which one is Hj Tambi's father?

When did the 2 great men live? Hj Tambi passed away in 1911. This is very recent compared to 1728.

IN MELAKA
  1. Hj Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan bin Tuanku Patis Nan Sabatang had lived from circa 1687 to circa 1811; possibly deceased aged 124 years old. He built Masjid Tengkera, Melaka in 1728. He built Masjid Batu Uban, Penang in 1734. His exact birth date and date of demise are unknown. He is buried at Masjid Batu Uban, Penang. Makam Nakhoda Nan Intan is at Masjid Batu Uban. His grave is not in Tengkera, Melaka. He lived during Dutch rule in Sumatra and Melaka. He lived in Singapore and Penang before the British East India Company (BEIC) arrived in Penang in 1789 and Singapore. His son is Hj Nuruddin (@Hj Tambi) bin Hj Muhammad Saleh.
  2. Nakhoda Nan Intan's son is Hj Nuruddin bin Hj Muhammad Saleh. He had lived circa 1786 in Tengkera, Melaka and at Arab Lane, Singapore. He was a cloth merchant in Singapore. He died on Saturday, 8 July 1911 (Sabtu, 12 Rejab 1329); deceased aged 125 years. Makam Hj Tambi is at a private grave plot in Tengkera, Melaka. His son is Hj Abdul Lathiff bin Hj Nuruddin (@ Hj Tambi), popularly known as Ulama' Nusantara.
  3. Nakhoda Nan Intan's granddaughter is Hjh Mahdom bt Hj Nuruddin. She had lived from circa 1864 to circa 1931; possibly deceased aged 67 years. She died in Tengkera and is buried at a private grave plot, along with her brother Hj Abdul Lathiff and their father, Hj Nuruddin @ Hj Tambi.
  4. Nakhoda Nan Intan's grandson is Hj Abdul Lathiff bin Hj Nuruddin (@ Hj Tambi). He was born in 1872 at Tanjong Mas, Melaka. He studied in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. He returned to Tengkera and became Imam Masjid Tengkera. He was a publisher and owned a printing press in Melaka and Singapore. He printed a lot of religious books and was a philanthropist. He died on 1 September 1939. He is buried at a private grave plot in Tengkera, Melaka, near to his father's makam, Makam Hj Nuruddin @ Hj Tambi.
  5. Nakhoda Nan Intan's great-granddaughter is Fatimah bt Hashim. She lived circa 1893 to 1966; possibly deceased aged 66 years. Her husband is Othman bin Puteh. Their son is Hj Ahmad bin Othman.
  6. Nakhoda Nan Intan's great-great-grandson is Hj Ahmad bin Othman. He lived from 1935 to 2001; died aged 66 years.  His wife is Zabedah. Their children are Azmi, Maheran and Azlina.
  7. Nakhoda Nan Intan's great-great-great grandchildren are Azmi, Maheran and Azlina Hj Ahmad.

IN PENANG
His crumbled makam is at Masjid Batu Uban. His grave is not in Tengkera, Melaka. He lived during Dutch rule in Sumatra and Melaka. He lived in Singapore and Penang before the British East India Company (BEIC) arrived in Penang in 1789 and Singapore.
  2. Hj Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan's daughter in Penang is Zaitun bt Hj Muhammad Saleh. Her mother is Asiah/Aishah (Pulau Pinang/Penang). Zaitun is the only daughter of her mother's 3 children. The other sibs are her brothers, Muhammad Ali and __. Zaitun bt Muhammad Saleh married to Sheikh Ahmad Makawi (an Arab from Makkah). Zaitun's son is Sheikh Muhammad Salleh al-Makawi bin Sheikh Ahmad Makawi.
  3. Nakhoda Nan Intan's grandson (cucu) is Sheikh Muhammad Salleh ibni Sheikh Ahmad Makawi, from his daughter Zaitun bt Hj Muhammad Saleh. He probably lived circa 1802, and lived past 100 years. He died on Friday, 10 March 1916 (Jumaat, 5 Jamadil Awal 1334 Hijrah); possibly deceased aged 114. His grave is outside under a big banyan tree, next to Nakhoda's grave at Masjid Batu Uban, Penang.
  4. Nakhoda Nan Intan's great-grandson (cicit) is Sheikh Ahmad Khidir bin Sheikh Muhammad Salleh Al-Makawi bin Sheikh Ahmad Makawi. He had lived from circa 1827 to 13 September 1903; possibly deceased aged 76 years old. He lived before and during British Penang. He is buried inside Masjid Jamek Batu Uban. Close-up of the Jawi inscription on his headstone says: Al-Fatihah. Sheikh Ahmad Khidir Sheikh Salleh Al-Makawi kembali ke Rahmatullah pada hari Isnin, 22 Jamadil Akhir 1321 Hijrah (Sunday, 13 September 1903 AD). He probably passed away after maghrib on Sunday night, which would be Isnin for Muslims.
  5. Nakhoda Nan Intan's great-great-grandson (piut) is Tuan Hj Husain (Tok Cik Husain) bin Ibrahim bin Sheikh Said Al-Makawi bin Sheikh Ahmad Al-Makawi (Sheikh Ahmad Al-Makawi was the son-in-law of Nakhoda Nan Intan and husband of his daughter Zaitun bt Hj Muhammad Saleh). Tuan Hj Husain lived in Langkawi. He was possibly born circa 1924; he was 89 years old in 2013. He had lived during British Penang, Kedah and Langkawi.

His Indonesian descendants from Payakumbuh, West Sumatra are from his marriage to first Indonesian wife at his homeland, Suraidi/Suripadi.

He had no children from his second Indonesian wife, "Che Aminah Deli". Deli is a famous seaport and for embarkation. Travellers leave Deli for nearby seaports in the region. I think she was a successful businesswoman and a famous public figure in the ancient Malay World.

His Singaporean descendants are from his marriage to his Singaporean wife, Jamilah. This could be circa 1722, before he migrated to Melaka or commuted between Singapore and Melaka.

His Melaka descendants are descended from his marriage to his Malacca wife, Sa'odah. Sa'odah could be a fair northern Indian lady from Melaka. Her son is Nuruddin @ Tamby. Tamby's youngest son, Hj Abdul Latiff bin Hj Tamby was fair (in the photos that I have from my father and his father/my grandfather). Nakhoda Nan Intan built Masjid Tengkera, Melaka in 1728.

His Penang descendants are descended from his marriage to his Penang wife, Asiah. This could be circa 1734, when he built Masjid Batu Uban in 1734.

Some of his Penang relatives are the descendants of Dato Jenaton, his brother-in-law.

Hj Muhammad Saleh's 11 or 12 children are:
  1. Abdullah anak Suraidi (Payakumbuh)
  2. Ibrahim anak Suraidi
  3. Ahmad anak Suraidi
  4. Yusuf anak Suraidi
  5. Ismail anak Suraidi
  6. Taha anak Jamilah (Singapore)
  7. Sa'id anak Jamilah
  8. Abdul Latiff anak Jamilah
  9. Hj Nuruddin (@Hj Tambi) anak Sa'odah (Melaka)
  10. Muhammad Ali anak Asiah (Penang)
  11. Zaitun anak Asiah
  12. Hj Mohd Noor anak siapa?

2 MASJIDS BUILT BY HJ MUHAMMAD SALEH
@NAKHODA NAN INTAN
==================================

The Minangkabau settlement at Batu Uban in Penang was there since 1710 and Masjid Batu Uban was constructed in 1734. Masjid Tengkera was constructed 6 years earlier, in 1728. Nakhoda nan Intan was possibly sailing back and forth between Penang, Malacca, and Sumatra in the early 1700s.

Nakhoda Nan Intan was the first Imam of Masjid Batu Uban in Penang (built in 1734). He must have stayed put (bermukim) at Batu Uban to be able to construct the mosque and become its imam.

Hj Muhammad Saleh built mosques - 2 are known:
  1. Masjid Tengkera, Melaka, built in 1728
  2. Masjid Batu Uban, Penang, built in 1734

MASJID KG HULU, early 1720s

Sahabudin or Shahbuddin was probably a Chinese from China who converted to Islam in Melaka.

Who was he?
  • Who was Sahabudin or Shahbuddin?
  • Who was Imam of Masjid Kg Hulu?
  • Who was Imam Shahbudin?
  • Who was Imam Shahbudin?
  • Who was Shahbuddin?
  • Who was Shahbudin bin Arom?
  • Who was Shahbuddin bin Haron?

He was Imam of Masjid Tengkera. He was probably Imam of Masjid Kg Hulu before coming to Tengkera. He built Masjid Kg Hulu earlier .... in 1720s.

Imam Shahbuddin possibly met and knew Hj Muhammad Saleh, who later built Masjid Tengkera in 1728.

Whom did Imam Shahbuddin marry?
  • Did he marry a Chinese lady?
  • Did he adopt a Chinese daughter?
  • Who was his wife?
  • Who was his daughter?

MASJID TENGKERA, TENGKERA, MELAKA 1728

Hj Muhammad Saleh/Nakhoda Nan Intan made his masjid at Tranquerah (Masjid Tengkera) and not at Banda Hilir.

Masjid Tengkera had a large Chinese Muslim population, including the wife of my great-great-grandfather Ismail. Ismail's wife was Inche Nyonia bt Tuan Sheikh Mohd Sahabudin.

Hj Muhammad Salleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan built Masjid Batu Uban, the oldest masjid in Penang and second oldest after Masjid Kampung Laut in Kelantan. Masjid Kampung Laut was shifted from Tumpat to Nilam Puri to avoid land erosion and losing the masjid altogether. Masjid Batu Uban is at its original site, by the sea previously, but now after land reclamation, it is quite far from the sea. Two highways separate the renovated Masjid Jamek Batu Uban from the seashore.

Before land reclamation, the sea was near the masjid. Every time the tide was high, it came up to the rear well which had to be covered. The well only has 2 keret, and is 2-keret deep. Each keret is a concrete ring measuring approximately 2 feet. So the well is about 4 feet deep and is full of water. Even though the well is by the sea, it contains freshwater and does not smell of chlorine or seawater. The water from the well is softwater and is very light to the touch. An electric pump helps to pump water from the ancient well to the small ablution pool in front (at the road side).

Nakhoda Nan Intan served as imam Masjid Batu Uban till he died.

An ancient well belonging to Masjid Jamek Batu Uban, Penang. The wellwater is used for ablution.

MASJID KG KELING, MELAKA

Masjid Kg Keling has a large Indian Muslim population, including the descendants of Munshi Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir.

Muzium Melaka called me to ask why there was a large Indian Muslim population connected to Masjid Kg Keling. I said I don't know.

Maheran Ahmad informed me about Masjid Kg Keling.

MASJID BANDA HILIR, 1820

Masjid Banda Hilir was built much later, in 1820, by an Indonesian Imam named Dato Shahbuddin bin Hj Mohd Amin, who was from Kadilangau, Cirebon, Java in Dutch Indonesia. His grave or makam is Jalan Panjang. It is known as Makam Dato' Shahbuddin (asal Cirebon).

He was probably related to Sunan Kalijogo (information from Abang Moin, 5 June 2016).

Bandar Hilir people were possibly related to Sunan Gunung Jati.

Whether they are related to the other Sunans, I don't know.

MUSLIM BURIAL RITES
===================

Ancient headstones on Penang (island) were mostly big wooden ones, as present at Perak Road cemetery.

Most clergy do not have their name on their headstone. They remained anonymous in unnamed graves in order to avoid a phenomenon called puja kubur - as happened for ages to the grave of Sultan Al Ariffin Sheikh Ismail at Pulau Besar in Malacca, Straits of Malacca.

BURIAL SITES OF HJ MUHAMMAD SALEH & HIS DESCENDANTS
@NAKHODA NAN INTAN
Places and graves where he and his descendants are buried
==================================

Where is Hj Muhammad Saleh buried?

Hj Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan is buried under a big banyan tree at Masjid Batu Uban, Penang.

There was a report of the grave of Dato Pepatih Nan Sabatang somewhere in the south.

Knowledge of the location of Hj Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan's grave is good to know. There is a practice of the Sufi called Tawassul, where prayers are made at the grave of pious men.

Where are the descendants of Hj Muhammad Saleh buried?

They should be buried near the masjid where they resided.

His descendants are buried at 3 major places, in Penang, Malacca and Singapore. There maybe graves in Payakumbuh and Deli in Sumatra.

(1) PENANG GRAVES

Graves of Nakhoda Nan Intan, his grandson and great-grandson
Tanah Perkuburan Masjid Jamek Batu Uban, Penang

In Penang, the graves are at Masjid Jamek Batu Uban, Kg Melayu Batu Uban. There are also graves at Masjid Jamek Mukim Jelutong Timur and at Perak Road Cemetery.

Hj Muhammad Saleh/Nakhoda Nan Intan passed away in Penang and is laid to rest at his masjid, Masjid Jamek Batu Uban, which he built in 1734.

Hj Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan is buried under a big banyan tree at Masjid Batu Uban, Penang.

Tok Chu mentioned that the grave of Nakhoda Nan Intan is at Masjid Batu Uban, where many Arabs are buried. We visited Masjid Batu Uban and looked around the associated graveyard to locate the grave of Nakhoda Nan Intan. In my first visit to the masjid and cemetery, I was uncertain which one was the grave of Nakhoda Nan Intan. There were 3 interesting graves - 2 under the big banyan tree and 1 inside the masjid. There is a demolished makam (shrine) at the foot of a big overgrown banyan tree. Within the crumbled walls of the makam are 2 male graves, with very different gravestones/ headstones (batu nisan yang berbeza). One headstone had inscriptions and the other had embossed inscriptions. I can make out the inscriptions on one of the headstones, but not the other. Makam outside ... under the big banyan tree:

HJ MUHAMMAD SALEH @ NAKHODA NAN INTAN
(putera raja, nakhoda bahtera, warak, alim, ulamak, imam, peneroka,
orang pertama yang membuka Pulau Pinang sebelum Inggeris)

He is buried under a banyan tree. However, the banyan tree grew to be a gigantic tree with roots trailing all over and covered his grave, and damaged its walls and columns. His grave is located in the middle of the crumbled makam. Another more recent grave lies to the left of his grave.

Aerial roots covering the entire remaining walls of the makamMakam viewed from Masjid Batu Uban. Go around the tree to the other side to view the two graves in the makam.
Two male graves within the crumbled walls of makam. Masjid Batu Uban (green) and the nearby high-rise (white) are in the background.
Two male graves in the makam  - Nakhoda Nan Intan and his grandson.

MAKAM HJ MUHAMMAD SALEH @ NAKHODA NAN INTAN
(makam di bawah pokok besar di luar masjid)

Makam Hj Muhammad Saleh
@ Nakhoda Nan Intan

It is difficult to decipher the inscriptions on this headstone. This is MOST POSSIBLY Nakhoda Nan Intan's new headstone since it has no name, whereas the other one has a name and date, and belongs to his grandson Sheikh Muhammad Salleh Al-Makawi bin Sheikh Ahmad Makawi. Sheikh Ahmad Makawi was an Arab from Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

The last digit for the year is Persian-Urdu numeral 4. So the year is 1334 Hijrii.
It says 5 or khamsa? 5 Jamadil Awal is a Thursday and not a Friday. So he could have passed away on Thursday night, after maghrib, which is a Friday in the Islamic count for start of a day (after maghrib), but Thursday in the Gregorian day.

  • Ahad, 1 Jamadil Awal 1334 Hijrii
  • Isnin, 2 Jamadil Awal 1334 Hijrii

GREAT-GRANDSON

There is one grave which is situated inside the masjid. The name and date do not show that it is the grave of Nakhoda Nan Intan or belong to his time, even though we were told it is Nakhoda Nan Intan's grave. It is NOT his grave!

It is the grave of his great-grandson, Sheikh Ahmad Khidir bin Sheikh Salleh Al-Makawi, dated to 1921 AD. This recent date does not point to Nakhoda Nan Intan.

Sheikh Ahmad Khidir bin Sheik Muhammad Salleh Al-Makawi is the great-grandson of Haji Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan.

His full name is Sheikh Ahmad Khidir bin Sheikh Salleh Al-Makawi bin Sheikh Ahmad Makawi-wife of Zaitun bt Hj Muhammad Saleh @ Nakhoda Nan Intan.

MALACCA GRAVES
In Melaka, the graves are at Masjid Tengkera and a private burial plot. According to Maheran Ahmad, her ascendants were Nakhoda's descendants and are buried at a shrine (makam) at Masjid Tengkera. She has access to the makam at Masjid Tengkera.

SINGAPORE GRAVES
In Singapore, the graves of Hjh Amnah bt Hj Mohd Sharif and that of her husband HABHAL have been relocated from Bidadari Cemetery to Pusara Abadi Muslim Cemetery.

Relatives
I haven't got the complete family tree for the descendants of my great-granduncle Hj Nordin bin Hj Ismail (Ujong Pasir, Melaka). I think Hj Abdul Latiff Tambi (Tengkera) that Hj Noordin's great-grandson Mahadhir Mohamad alluded to could be related to Hj Noordin bin Ismail, and therefore to Nakhoda Nan Intan.

Baharin Tamby referred to Hjh Khalthum/Kalsom as Nenek Aunty.

I referred to her as Nenek Chom, and her husband as Tok Jamaluddin.

According to Dr Sabariah Faizah, her mother Khalthum was 9 years old when her father Hj Abdul Lathiff passed away. Khalthum's mother was her father's 'last wife'.

It contains information about the descendants of Kapitan Keling, Dato Keramat etc. The photos below were taken from Malek Alhabshi's Facebook.

(Nadhok or nanderk could refer to the dot on the forehead.)

Identity of Haji Muhammad Salleh @ Nakhoda nan Intan.

There were possibly 2 men with the same name. There were 2 men named Haji Muhammad Salleh, who lived at 2 different times, one during Dutch Sumatra, and the other during British Malaya.
  1. The more recent is Haji Muhammad Salleh of the 1800s, under British Singapore and British Malaya. This one is not Nakhoda nan Intan. This man has only 5 generations today.
  2. There is a much older Haji Muhammad Salleh of the late 1600s-early 1700s, under Dutch Sumatra and Dutch Malaya. This one is Nakhoda nan Intan. This one has 10 generations today.

There are many versions of narratives from various people and historians.
  1. Haji Muhammad Salleh of early 1700s who came from the Pagaruyung Palace of West Sumatra, now in Indonesia.
  2. Haji Muhammad Salleh during the Dutch War in West Sumatra, Indonesia...late 1600s-early 1700s.
  3. Haji Muhammad Salleh in British Malaya ... 1800s
  4. Haji Muhammad Salleh with 5 generations of descendants in 2013... in Penang ... family tree as provided by the Governor in Sumatra.
  5. Haji Muhammad Salleh with 10 generations of descendants in 2013 ... since early 1700s ... in Malacca and Penang.

FAMILY TREES
============

Please refer to the flowchart or family tree provided by Prof Ahmad Murad Merican for details. The family tree is an old one and does not include details of the present generations.

Also refer to Nenek Kalthom's documents for details of Nakhoda Nan Intan's Penang wife and her descendants. Nenek Kalthom lives in Kg Batu Uban, Penang.

Three good detailed family trees, one each for Singapore, Malacca and Penang, will clear all doubts.

The family tree for Penang relatives is detailed, but missing the more recent generations and names.

The family tree for Malacca relatives is being constructed by Maheran Ahmad's brother, Azmi Ahmad.

The family tree for Singapore relatives is nowhere to be found.

Many inter-related family trees exist online on Geni.com. Not having a professional license makes it difficult to update, manage or curate the family trees.
