Yesterday saw the birth of a new newspaper in Singapore.

Yesterday - the Utusan Zaman, which publishes news in romanised Malay, and is printed and issued by the Utusan Melayu Press Limited.

The first issue had on its front page a three-column picture of Miss Mimi Shahrir, adopted daughter of Sutan Shahrir, former Prime Minister of Indonesia and now on a special mission to India.

Utusan Zaman splashed the news of Indonesia before UNO, and the second main item on the front page was the call by the Daily Mirror to Prime Minister Mr. Clement Attlee to resign.

The Utusan Zaman is a two-page paper temporarily, and is sold at 10 cents a copy.

Plans for expansion of the paper are well in hand.

Lagu Melayu Asli

Lagu Melayu Asli is a precious body of culture, knowledge and tradition. Unlike modern songs and music, Lagu Melayu Asli (Malay Classical Music or Traditional Malay Music) is rarely heard or performed today. As such Malay children born after 1980s, do not know or do not like to listen to Lagu Melayu Asli. They can hardly appreciate Lagu Melayu Asli, thinking that it sounds stupid.

Lagu Melayu Asli keeps the lyrics intact for generations for people in the region - the larger Malay World - Dunia Melayu, and the Archipelago - Nusantara. Only the pronunciation of certain words may change as the Malay language evolves - words like kerana can be karena. Indonesian words make good replacement for many words - eg pasrah, peria, and wishes such as Minal Aidin Wal Faizan.

For many Malay music lovers, Lagu Melayu Asli is evergreen and calming. They provide good listening during the hot afternoons and warm evenings as the Malays certainly enjoy siesta, while waiting for the scorching sun to slip and sunset to come alive. Malay life is calm, alive and lively as their music.

In Malacca, the Dondang Sayang dominates the night air after the last night prayer. One can hear Dondang Sayang music clearly throughout the night up to midnight. When Dondang Sayang stops at midnight, the night becomes totally quiet.

I have always enjoyed Lagu Melayu Asli and Dondang Sayang in particular. I have not appreciated modern music much except the jazz that I now. If you appreciate jazz, then you will appreciate Lagu Melayu Asli.

Ena Mohamad left a message in my WhatsApp. She said she is Abang Mohamad's daughter.

Azreena bt Mohamad (Ena Mohamad in FB) called on behalf of her father, Abang Mohamad (my second eldest cousin). I did not pick up the calls as I did not know who was calling. I then spoke to Abang Mohamad. I have never spoken to him on the phone before.

------
I don't recall Mak Ainon's 2 elder sons. I only heard their names and have their photos (from Bapak's collection) when they were little boys (ages 4-5 years old).  I met him and his elder brother when Mak Ainon was taken ill and laid on her death bed in a small wooden house. I could not tell the brothers apart. Mak Ainon passed away soon after we left Umbai, in August 1984. Arwah Farid my brother took Affandi and me to visit Abang Rahman and wife at their home, behind a petrol station. They had already retired from the catering business.

-----
I then spoke to Abang Mohamad on the phone.

From Abang Mohamad (Monday, 12 September 2016), first day Hari Raya Haji/Aidiladha:

His parents:
  1. Mak Ainon passed away in August 1984.
  2. Pak Abas passed away in Nov/Oct 1997.

Susunan anak-anak Pak Abas-Mak Ainon:
  • Abang Rahman (Abdul Rahman) is the eldest, Abang Mohamad (himself) is second, Kak Hawa is third, arwah Kak Yam (Mariam) is fourth), Kak Leha (Zaleha) is fifth and the youngest is Musa.
Update adik-beradik Abang Mohamad:
  • Abang Rahman is about 70+. His wife has passed away. She was doing catering. Lived in Shah Alam.
  • Abang Mohamad worked at Eon HQ. He is retired. He married Arison bt Mohamed. She had worked as an MLT at IMR in KL for 36 years (1972-2005; +3 years). I spoke to Kak Arison. She knows Dr Lim Ju Boo and Dr DeWitt of IMR. She said Dr DeWitt was a gerago(?) - Melaka Portuguese, but looked more Chinese. She worked in Hematology under Dr Zabedah, who was much junior and often went to USM Kubang Kerian. She worked on cancer. She continued to work on contract after retirement but then retired for good to join her daughter in Melbourne. Abang Mohamad has 3 daughters - Azreena (Ena Mohamad in FB) is married and has 4 kids. She and husband pursued their PhD in Education at Melbourne University under scholarship from the Ministry of Education.  She is now at Sekolah Tg Melewar, Seremban. Her colleague at Melbourne U is Dr Azreene of USM. Abang Mohamad has 12 grandchildren (cucu). Abang Mohamad gave his phone number.
  • Kak Hawa married Abang Razak. Abang Razak is older than Abang Mohamad; he is probably 72 years old. Abang Razak has retired from the private sector. He is now a pensioner. He had undergone bypass. Kak Hawa has a son named Rafikudin. Abang Mohamad gave Kak Hawa's phone number.
  • Kak Zaleha is the youngest girl.
  • Musa is the youngest sibling.

KICAP HABHAL

History of HABHAL soy sauce

How it all began ...

HABHAL was a famous saudagar kicap in Singapore till his demise. The acronym HABHAL stands for Haji Ahmad bin Haji Abdul Latiff, the son of Haji Abdul Latiff bin Hj Tambi - a renowned Ulama' Nusantara from Tengkera, MelakaHABHAL was originally from Tengkera, Melaka. HABHAL married Nenek Amnah bt Hj Mohd Sharif of Banda Hilir and had 7 children - Zaini (1926/7), Zaiton, Saadah, Mahmud, Mohamad (1931), Tamby (1936) and Aishah (1937).

HABHAL was also the brand name of the founder's famous kicap (soy sauce) made in Singapore. According to Bapak, HABHAL bought kicap from a Chinese and then added his own ingredients to make HABHAL soy sauce. The initial premise was at Jalan Mangga in Geylang, Singapore. Bapak knew HABHAL and Amnah. We visited the place when we were kids. I still remember the place.

Zaini married Saadiah, both were schoolteachers. They had 2 sons - Mohd Jamil and Ahmad.

After HABHAL passed away ...

HABHAL passed away and his eldest son Haji Zaini replaced him in the kicap business in Singapore.  HABHAL's eldest son Cikgu Zaini took care of the HABHAL kicap business as its Director.

After Cikgu Zaini passed away ...

Cikgu Zaini passed away and his wife Cikgu Sa'adiah bt Buyong took over the business. She is from Kajang, Selangor but lives in Singapore. She is ~70 years old in 2016.

Bapak had written the address of Cikgu Sa'adiah's father, Hj Buyong Lenggang, on a small piece of scrap paper as shown below. This was probably when he was at Cikgu Zaini and Cikgu Saadiah's wedding. Bapak mentioned he went to Cikgu Zaini's wedding. Maybe Cikgu Saadiah's parents lived at Kg Sungai Merab in Kajang, Selangor.

Hj. Buyong Lenggang
Sutan 11, Kg Sungai Merab, Kajang
From Bapak's drawer at home in Minden Heights, Penang.

In 1981, the kicap manufacturing facilities were renamed Jalil Enterprise and operated at No. 8 & 8A Lorong Pemuda, Kg Melayu Majidee, Johor Bahru. Retired Cikgu Sa'adiah bt Buyong was in-charge of operations in Johor, but she lives in Singapore. Kicap HABHAL distributor in Singapore was AR Trading.

In 1982, the distributor was Hj Daud Jalok, who set up Shahidah Enterprise and sold kicap HABHAL, along with other products.

In 1985, HABHAL's son, Mohd bin Hj Ahmad (54) who lived at 134 Lorong Sarina, Singapore, placed an announcement in the ad column. He mentioned that Kicap HABHAL was produced since after WWII with the Reg. No. 62520.

Transfer of ownership

On 25 November 1986, Zara Foodstuff & Industries took over HABHAL's kicap business. It operated at No. 4 Jalan Tahana, Off Jalan Tampoi, __. The manager is Zolkifli bin Haji Lambak. Solicitors for Zara Foodstuff Industries & Habhal & Sons Trading were Abdul Raman Saad & Associates, Suite 1, 16th floor, Tun Abdul Razak Complex, JB.
