FAMILY VISITATIONS

First Visit
I visited  Professor Syed Mohsin bin Syed Sahil Jamalullail at his home in Kampung Huda, Kubang Kerian, Kelantan earlier in this evening, Sunday, 23 October 2011. I interviewed him from approximately 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm over fragrant chrysanthemum tea and cream puffs. Prof. Syed Mohsin or "Tuan Syed" as I called him, was an authority on the Syed story in Penang (and maybe too in Malaysia and Singapore). I have always resorted to him for anything that had to do with Arabs and things Arabic. I first came to know him when I first started working as a lecturer at USM Medical School in Penang in June 1982. He was already a lecturer and was also one of the 5 founders of the USM Medical School, then based in Penang. He taught Pharmacology to the first, second, third and fourth batches of medical students at UKM prior to joining USM. The present Director-General (DG) was his student; the present DG was in the second batch of medical students at UKM.

The information below was obtained from Prof. Syed Mohsin at the first visit on 23 October 2011, at his home in Kg Huda, Kubang Kerian, Kelantan.

Professor Syed Mohsin bin Syed Sahil Jamalullail
Almarhum Prof Syed Mohsin (1951-2011)

Prof. Syed Mohsin was popularly known as Tuan Syed or Prof Syed. He was Ami Chen to his Arab relatives.

Prof. Syed Mohsin was born in Batu Uban, Penang on Independence day, 31 August 1951 (same year Datuk Zainal Abidin bin Ismail Alyamani was born, anak Nya Intan, Klang).

He passed away on Sunday, 6 November 2011, which coincided with the first day of Aidiladha celebrations, 10 Zulhijjah 1432 Hijrah. He died in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan. He is laid to rest at Kubur Demit in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan.

Prof. Syed previously worked with UKM Medical School before he was seconded to USM Medical School. He was one of the 5 founding lecturers of the USM Medical School in 1979. At the time he was known as Tuan Syed as he was the only lecturer with a Syed name. He became a full professor at USM, for which he was called Prof Syed. (Another Syed lecturer in O&G was Prof. Syed Abdullah who returned from the UK. He was a relative of my father but I don't know the exact links.)

Prof. Syed's father is Syed Sahil Jamalullail who died in 2010 and is buried at Masjid Arau in Arau, Perlis. I met Syed Sahil at Prof. Syed's second child's (son) wedding at Kg Huda, Kubang Kerian, Kelantan.

Second Visit
I received an SMS from Tengku Damitri of Tuan Syed's sudden demise and after he was buried, around Maghrib. I have no idea why the SMS arrived late on my handphone. I visited Kak Hasnah and family at home after solat Isya' today, 7 November 2011. The area was wet after the rain and puddles of water could be seen. Affandi parked our car far away and we walked to the house in darkness. There were many cars parked by the road on the right shoulder. When I arrived in the house compound, they were already reading Surah Yaasin. I used my own buku doa Mathurat. Then I started sneezing in the cold night. After all the bacaan al-Quran and doa, the men exited and went for refreshment outside. My husband and I and the other ladies then entered the house. I went to find Kak Hasnah. I met Kak Hasnah and the other family members. It was the first time I met everyone in a large gathering. It was a sad gathering but it was a good learning experience for me. There were many Arab men and ladies in the house. I knew nobody except the ones I met at the first visit - Kak Hasnah, Muna Maisara and Lokmanul Hakim. Muna Maisara remembered me as she took our photos at the first visit. Then I sat next to a beautiful lady whom I never knew. I was introduced to her by Siti Salamah, also an Arab. I was introduced to Tuan Syed's mother for the first time. She is a dear lady and I think every woman must try to meet her and talk to her. She is Sharifah Mariam bt Syed Alwi (80 years). She asked me who I am and we started talking to see how we could be related. I talked mostly to Siti Salamah for my family links to Tuan Syed. I will therefore update information obtained from my first visit.

The information below was obtained from Siti Salamah, Sharifah Mariam bt Syed Alwi and Sharifah Alwiah Syed Sahil, day after Prof. Syed Mohsin passed away, at the first tahlil on 7 November 2011, at his home in Kg Huda, Kubang Kerian, Kelantan.

House of Jamalullail

The clan name Jamalullail should strike us as a regal name in the Malay world.

So far, I have managed to trace a few of the Jamalullail clan members in Malaysia. They are related directly to Prophet Muhammad SAW via his daughter, and via her sons.

They are domiciled in a few places in Malaysia:
  1. Jelutong, Penang
  2. Batu Uban, Penang
  3. Kubang Kerian, Kelantan
  4. Jitra, Kedah
  5. Kuala Lumpur
  6. Arau, Perlis

There were 3 Jamalullail doctors in Malaysia:

  1. Dr Syed Mahmood bin Syed Hussain Jamalullail (an early Malay doctor, deceased),
  2. Dr Syed Mohamed Noori Syed Hussain Jamalullail (youngest brother of Dr Syed Mahmood), and
  3. Prof Syed Mohsin bin Syed Sahil Jamalullail (deceased).

Penang Arabs

The Arabs whom we see today are from the former British Settlements of Penang, Singapore and Malacca. The Arabs at these 3 settlements are related by way of marriage of their ascendants and descendants.

I am fortunate to have some updates from today's Arab community. We can see how they are connected to the early Malay doctors and to business and religion in this region.

This post contains information which I received from a paternal relative, Syed Alwi Aidid. He stumbled upon my blog on The Early Malay Doctors (TEMD) long ago and wrote to me on 28 March 2013, to "fill in the gaps" of my previous post on "Penang Arabs".

It is quite difficult to document the Arab male lineages properly as they migrated and intermarried among Arabs of the Straits Settlements. They intermarried, but rarely married to outsiders (to Chinese ladies, and ladies of the royal Malay households).

I have gathered here all the possible Arab names I have collected over the course of the research on The Early Malay Doctors. I have included Syed and non Syed Arab names for a more complete write-up on the Arabs of the Straits Settlements. I have also maintained full names of the Arab persons as their names can be easily confused without mentioning the full name and clan name.

Arab name convention
  1. The Syed male name prefix is inherited from a Syed father. The Sharifah female name prefix is inherited from a Syed father, irregardless of the mother. The Sheikh male name prefix is acquired by a non Syed male who is educated or knowledgeable.
  2. The family trees and names are usually written in Jawi script. Thus, when the Arab names are spelled using the Roman alphabet, there tends to be discrepancy in the name spellings in different accounts and sources. This is expected as the Jawi spelled names do not use vowels (a=alif, e/i/o=ya, u=wau). My name Faridah is fa, alif, ro, ya, dal, ha (missing an alif between dal and ha). Abu Bakar is alif, ba, wau and ba, kaf, ro (missing alif between ba and kaf, and between kaf and ro).
  3. Name suffix points to a family or clan origin. It could be an added name based on a centre of learning or taken after a noble man's origin or clan name. Eg, Makawi suffix points to origin in Makkah or implies one had completed extensive studies in Makkah. Other suffixes are Algardrie, Alkaff, Aidid, etc.

[Update from Nazmi Hassan Razak, 18 Dec 2013: He died on the 28th of February 1983.]

---
Relatives often reminded me that his house was "rumah besar sebelah Shell Air Hitam". He had passed away on 28 February 1983. His youngest daughter and I were working at the USM Medical School in Penang. His eldest daughter was the Chairman of Persatuan Wanita USM and I was the treasurer.

I remember entering this house to pay my last respect as they performed mandi jenazah on him before burial. The ladies and I were allowed to see him. I took a long look at his face because I wanted to remember him as I had never met him when he was alive. I still remember his characteristic nose. It was from this memory that I was able to search for his portrait at the USM library in Penang.

His house photos (below) were taken by me when I visited Penang on 6 December 2015

Going towards Bukit Bendera, Jalan Bukit Bendera in Air Hitam (main road).
Shell is the landmark to locate his house.
Approaching his house. View after returning from Bukit Bendera.
There is a junction after Shell and before his house.
This is his house.
The house was under renovation when I passed by and took photos of it on 6 December 2015.

Update from me, 4 September 2013:

My maternal grandfather's house was at 219 Solok Pemancar. He lived there and I was there for holidays in the early 1960s, before I went to school. Immediately across the road was a big old tree, underneath which some Indian devotees prayed, shook bells and chanted. My grandfather got irritated from the 'noise under the big tree' and sold the house, and moved further uphill. But I still like the house, even today. I can't recall what the interior is like anymore but I remember the front entrance and tiles, and perimeter walls.
Amendment received from Wan Latifah (10 Sept 2013): I would just like to correct the post regarding 219 Solok Pemancar. This house was bought not by Tan Sri Datuk Syed Hassan Aidid but by his elder brother, my grandfather, Datuk S. M. Aidid. He lived in the house until he passed away in November 2007 at the age of 105.

Tan Sri Syed Hassan Aidid is a relative of my father. They are descended from the Sumatran Acehnese Arab people, Keturunan Aceh Peranakan Arab. They are related to the Sumatran Minangkabau people who opened the earliest Malay settlement in Penang at Kg Batu Uban, some distance from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). This settlement was opened by Nakhoda Nan Intan @ Hj Muhammad Saleh, an imam and sufi prince.

Nakhoda Nan Intan's brother(?) or friend(?), Nakhoda Kecil and his people developed Tanjong Penaga, growing paddy (tanam padi), sugar-cane, and coconut among other plants. Nakhoda Kecil went to greet and meet Captain Francis Light on the marshy shores of Tanjong Penaga (Cape Penaigre). Captain Francis Light and his people, and the first batch of Indian convicts developed the paddy fields, etc to become a city that we have today. This area became George Town, named after King George V or VI?

Penang did not lag behind in business and trade as in 1925, there was Dr Ali Othman Merican (Dr A.O. Merican) who helped founded the Penang Malay Association (PMA) which looked into Malay businesses, commerce, trade and industry. Dr A.O. Merican left Penang shortly after, to go to Kelantan in 1927. He became a successful doctor in Kelantan.

At the time of Merdeka, there were few rich Malays in Penang, including those who had businesses going. The Malays were doing well on the island in the 1960s even though many Malays in the villages were poor - they were living at subsistence level (kais pagi makan pagi, kais petang makan petang). It should not surprise us because the Malays preferred a simple life and not run after riches. We must accept this fact and not simply accuse the Malays of being lazy and unable to compete - they are living at their best and they are comfortable with life. It is us who are terrified by their simple way of life and want them to change. In the Malay style of living, rich Malays helped the poor Malays, even among siblings and friends. We actually do not have to change them. What we must worry about is the business-hungry people who want the poor Malays to give up their lands and lives. This we must prevent and put a stop to. Let the poor Penang Malays live as they wish - their landed kampung house is worth millions today but all they want is a simple life in a wooden house - just leave them alone, let them be happy. If we want to help, we can, but by making good roads and drainage where the Malay kampungs are. Just don't force them to change. They are an extinct breed already. Tourists also want to see the real Malays in true Malay settings. Don't change anything but improve on the landscape and facilities.

The PMA is still managing well alongside many other bodies. The Malays must come together and work hard together if they are to remain on Penang island. They cannot just sit back and live. It will be sad if all the Malays on the island have to leave. I will be very sad, just sad as what happened to Singapore where many of my relatives still reside. Singapore is a rather sad story but we must try and save Penang while it is still ours.

The Penang Malays at Kg Sg Gelugor have an active cooperative and the poor villagers in the village get to own houses via this cooperative. So, there are means to help the poor Malays in Penang but the Malays themselves must learn about such existing opportunities and be actively involved in the developmental projects around or near them. They stand to benefit if they do things right and have a positive attitude. My mother benefited from the cooperative at Kg Sg Gelugor - she obtained a double-storey wooden house from the subscription money she paid to the cooperative. I don't know about other cooperatives in Penang. There is also now another active cooperative established by the historic Dato' Jenaton Group - this is a rapid developing cooperative and worth investing in for the Malays.

Penang Wedding

I came to office today and there was a wedding card in my pigeonhole. At first I had a hard time trying to remember names and people from 30 years ago when I worked at USM in Penang, The card is from my father's relative, Sharifah Hasnah Syed Aidid. I know her name but I can't recall when we last met. I know her eldest sister who also worked at USM and was in Persatuan Wanita USM with me. I remember attending her father's funeral rite at the family home in Ayer Itam. Her daughter's wedding is this Saturday, 7 December 2013; Affandi said we will try to make it (today is Thursday). My surgical wounds have healed and there should be no problem travelling by car, in shaa Allah. The East-West Highway should be safe even though it is the monsoon season here in Kelantan.

Another Prof Abu Hassan is also known as Danker in his circle of close friends, including Prof Zairi Jaal (mosquito research). Prof Zairi Jaal is the brother of Zaiton Jaal, I think possibly an ex-TKCian. Prof Abu Hassan graduated from the University of Davies, California. I don't know his field of specialty (he is in Biology School, USM).

A pharmacologist by training, Prof Syed Mohsin taught Pharmacology to medical students. He was a good teacher. A gifted man, he was not only a lecturer, but he was an advisor to all who came to seek his knowledge and wisdom. Everyone liked him and came to seek his unlimited advice. Even the postgraduates and faculty members sought his advice. He was easily approachable. He loved all who knew him and that was the most remarkable characteristic of Tuan Syed/Prof Syed. He was soft spoken and loved to crack jokes to lighten up things when he was in advisory mode. It did not matter to him where people met him to discuss important matters - even the parking lot was fine. He is best remembered for his zest in medicinal herbs and traditional healing practices. Among his remedies are goat's milk for liver diseases. FAMILY BACKGROUND

Prof Syed Mohsin comes from a well-known and respected Yemeni Arab family based in Penang-Kedah-Perlis region. He was descended from the early Arabs who came to Malaya from Hadramaut in Yemen. The early Yemenis arrived in Penang and settled in Jelutong, and Masjid Jamek Jelutong marks the area where this historic landing occurred and where Islam spread in Penang. Masjid Jelutong is where the early Yemenis were buried (their burial plot is called "Kubur Syed"). The Jamalullail Arab clan is connected to the Perlis throne. It is the first instance that the Arabs married to the royal Malay household. The Perlis throne still carries the Syed prefix and the Jamalullail suffix.

Prof Syed Mohsin's father is Syed Sahil Jamalullail who died in 2010 and was interred at Masjid Arau in Arau, Perlis. Prof Syed Mohsin's mother is Sharifah Mariam bt Syed Alwi (aged 80) who lives in Jitra, Kedah. Sharifah Mariam's half-sister is Sharifah Rahmah bt Syed Alwi, whose daughter is Dr Sharifah Mariam bt Syed Aidid.

Prof Syed Mohsin and Dr Sharifah Mariam bt Syed Aidid were cousins. Dr Sharifah Mariam bt Syed Aidid was the first Chairman of the USM Women's Association (Persatuan Wanita USM) in the early 1980s.

Prof Syed Mohsin was also related to Emeritus Professor Dato' Zuraina Abdul Majid, the youngest sister of Dato' Paduka Ruby Majid. Prof Zuraina is Malaysia's foremost archaeologist whose work led to the discovery of Perak Man and the historical diggings at Lenggong.

Prof Syed Mohsin is also related to another famous early Malay doctor - Dr Syed Mohamed Alwi Alhady, a gastroenterologist who served at Penang General Hospital before he moved to General Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Mr SMA Alhady was responsible for the set up of the National Science Foundation. A pioneer and entrepreneur, Mr SMA Alhady, Dr Haji Abbas bin Haji Alias and Dr Hassan set up Hospital Pantai, the first Malay private hospital in Malaysia.

Sharifah Mariam bt Syed Alwi married to Syed Sahil Jamalullail. They were blessed with 8 children, 4 sons and 4 daughters. Prof Syed Mohsin was the third of 8 siblings:
  1. Syed Omar Syed Sahil
  2. Sharifah Zahrah Syed Sahil
  3. Syed Mohsin Syed Sahil (b.31 August 1951-d.6 November 2011)
  4. Sharifah Sakinah Syed Sahil
  5. Sharifah Alwiah Syed Sahil
  6. Syed Mohamad Syed Sahil
  7. Syed Haizar Syed Sahil
  8. Sharifah Azizah Syed Sahil

Prof Syed Mohsin married to Puan Hasnah bt Ishak. She had served several posts in USM and was the Head of Graduate Studies (Institute Pengajian Siswazah, IPS) at the USM Health Campus before she retired in September 2012. They are blessed with 7 children.
  1. Syed Hazman is an architect.
  2. Syed Muhammad Hilmi is a petroleum engineer with Exxon Mobile.
  3. Dr Syed Hasanul Hadi was trained by PCM & Sheffield. He underwent training as surgeon in the MMed Surgery Programme at the USM Medical School. He completed his MMed degree in 2013.
  4. Sharifah Muna Maisara is a schoolteacher in Sabah.
  5. Syed Muhammad Husni prefers the Arts and composes songs.
  6. Syed Muhammad Harith has a Diploma in Mechatronics. He is a technician and works with Samsung in Senawang, Negeri Sembilan.
  7. Syed Muhammad Hafizuddin was at Poly. He is now in Petaling Jaya.

A simple and quiet person, Prof Syed Mohsin enjoyed good friendship beside golf and reading. He played golf even during Ramadhan. It was at his last golf stint in Ramadhan (three days before Aidilfitri) that he swung his golf club too hard and suffered pain which landed him in Hospital USM (HUSM).

When I visited him at home after he was discharged from HUSM, he was on home rest and recuperating at home. He was in a good mood to receive my visit and we started talking about his health condition among others. He had suffered from chronic prostate cancer. He had just finished reading Tun Mahathir's book - A Doctor in the House. I had come to consult him about the 'Arabs in Penang' for my book, The Early Malay Doctors. As usual, we shared a lot of fun in telling stories about history - after the war, the early post-Merdeka days, etc. I was to come back later for follow-up on some of our stories. He was thankful that I had come to visit him, which made him happy and lifted his spirit to live. Alas! That was the last time I met Prof Syed Mohsin.

Prof Syed Mohsin passed away on Sunday, 6 November 2011, which coincided with the first day of Aidiladha celebrations, 10 Zulhijjah 1432 Hijrah. He died in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan. He was interred on 7 November 2011 at Kubur Demit in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan. He is dearly missed by his students, peers, family members and relatives.

This is uttered as an expression upon hearing the news of some loss or some one’s death:
