Asal-usul nenek moyangnya dikatakan berasal dari India. Walaupun dilahirkan di Melaka, usia kecilnya banyak dihabiskan di Singapura. [Haji Tambi lived and traded in Singapore. The family lived mainly in Singapore.]
Dikatakan bahawa selain mengajar, beliau turut mengusahakan perniagaan kain seperti ayahandanya. [Haji Tambi @ Haji Nuruddin bin Haji Muhammad Salleh, was a cloth merchant in Singapore.]

  5. Dalailul Khairat – Menurut Almarhum Tuan Guru Haji Wan Mohd Saghir Abdullah, kandungannya belum diketahui namun judulnya diperolehi melalui iklan Al-Ahmadiah Press pada halaman belakang risalah Ibu Di Dalam Rumahnya yang dikarang oleh Raja Haji Umar bin Raja Haji Hasan Riau, cetakan tahun 1926 M.
  6. Qiblah Dalail al-Hairan fi Jawazi Hadmi Masjid as-Sulthan – Judul ini diketahui melalui karya beliau berjudul Tazkiratus Sunnatil Basyar bi Ahkami Itsna `Asyar (Rangkapan).

History of the 3 masjids

Haji Muhammad Salleh married 3 wives - in Singapore, Malacca, and Penang. He erected a masjid at each place (port of call). Altogether, Haji Muhammad Salleh built 3 mosques in Singapore and Malaya. These became the early centres of Islamic study and expansion.
  1. Masjid Haji Muhammad Salleh in Singapore (new masjid, re-dated to 1903). This is near Makam Habib Noh Alhabshi. There is no photograph of the original masjid.
  2. Masjid Tengkera, Melaka in 1728.
  3. Masjid Batu Uban, Kg Melayu (Arab) Batu Uban, Penang in 1734.

Identity of Haji Muhammad Salleh @ Nakhoda nan Intan.

There are possibly 2 men with the same name. There are 2 Haji Muhammad Salleh, who lived at 2 different times, one during Dutch Sumatra, and the other during British Malaya.
  1. The more recent is Haji Muhammad Salleh of the 1800s, under British Singapore and British Malaya. This one is not Nakhoda nan Intan. This man has only 5 generations today.
  2. There is a much older Haji Muhammad Salleh of the late 1600s-early 1700s, under Dutch Sumatra and Dutch Malaya. This one is Nakhoda nan Intan. This one has 10 generations today.
-----

There are many versions of narratives from various people and historians.
  1. Haji Muhammad Salleh of early 1700s who came from the Pagaruyung Palace of West Sumatra, now in Indonesia.
  2. Haji Muhammad Salleh during the Dutch War in West Sumatra, Indonesia...late 1600s-early 1700s.
  3. Haji Muhammad Salleh in British Malaya ... 1800s
  4. Haji Muhammad Salleh with 5 generations of descendants in 2013... in Penang ... family tree as provided by the Governor in Sumatra.
  5. Haji Muhammad Salleh with 10 generations of descendants in 2013 ... since early 1700s ... in Malacca and Penang.

Three good detailed family trees, one each for Singapore, Malacca and Penang, will clear all doubts.

The family tree for Penang is detailed, but missing the more recent generations and names.

The family tree for Malacca is being constructed by Maheran Ahmad's brother, Azmi Ahmad.

The family tree for Singapore is nowhere to be found.

Makam Shabuddin

There are 2 accounts of Makam Shahbuddin.

From Bapak in 2007:

Bapak mentioned that there is Makam Shahbuddin Al-Yamani in the graveyard of Masjid Tengkera, Malacca. He is an Indian from Tranquera (orang India Tengkera) and has relatives in Singapore.

From Mahadhir (cicit Haji Noordin of Ujong Pasir):

There is another Makam Shahbuddin in perkuburan Jalan Panjang, in Banda Hilir. This is Shahbuddin bin Mohd Amin from Cirebon, Java in Indonesia. Some of his people (followers?) came to visit his grave, but they have stopped coming. This Shahbuddin built Masjid Banda Hilir in 1820, under British Malaya.

------------------

Kg Baru in Kuala Lumpur

Nenek Inche is Aishah bt Mohd Amin.

Mohd Amin was the first man who opened Kg Baru in Kuala Lumpur. He was a Javanese Muslim.

His house was across the padang from the Sultan Sulaiman Club.

The Sultan Sulaiman Club was built in 1909, and renovated in 1931, and then much later by Jafri Merican Architects and Associates.

---------------------------

Mohd Amin is better known as Mat Amin Pasar. He lived in Kg Baru, KL.

The marketplace in Kuala Lumpur developed in 3 stages:
  1. Pasar Kuala Lumpur ... probably open-air and surrounded by shop buildings, with parking for cars and lorries etc.
  2. Central Market ... Pasar Seni which we have today.
  3. Pasar Chow Kit ... which was built in 1955

(i) Pasar Kuala Lumpur

Mohd Amin was entrusted by the British to look after the Kuala Lumpur market (later known as Chow Kit market, and he as Mat Amin Chow Kit).

Mohd Amin most probably worked as Penguasa Pasar Kuala Lumpur.

The Kuala Lumpur market functioned in the open space before the 1930s. There are picture postcards of this early market.

(ii) Central Market

The Central Market brick building that we have today, was still in the planning stage when Mohd Amin passed away in 1936.

The Kuala Lumpur market gave way to the Central Market after Mohd Amin passed away. This market could support a larger community as Kuala Lumpur developed.

Mohd Amin passed away in 1936.

(iii) Pasar Chow Kit

Another more modern multistorey Chow Kit market brick building was built in 1955.

Chow Kit market today is a brick building and sprawls onto the surrounding roads in makeshift tents and hawker stalls.
