In 1889, as a little boy aged 4 years, Khalil went to Makkah to learn. He studied by halaqah methodology at Masjidil Haram, for approximately 10 years (1889-1899).

At the time in 1889, there were many ulama from Alam Melayu who held halaqahs at the Grand Mosque. They included:

One of Khalil's main tutor was Syeikh Umar bin Abdur Rasyid as-Sumbawi. He was from Sembawa in South Sumatra, Indonesia. Sembawa is an agricultural region with a majority (70%) workforce of farmers and animal breeders.

It is storied that Khalil then taught ulama Alam Melayu for 12 years in Makkah (1899-1911).

He lived approximately 22 years in Makkah (1889-1911).

To support himself in Makkah, Khalil helped to carry zamzam water for wages.

From Abang Sharif:
Tuan Haji Khalil was a friend of Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail (Walid's father, Bapak's grandfather). Tuan Haji Khalil, Haji Mohd Sharif and Haji Nordin made the same house like Rumah 262 Banda Hilir.

Haji Mohd Sharif made Rumah 262-T Banda Hilir. Haji Nordin made Rumah 302 Banda Hilir. We don't know where Tuan Haji Khalil made his house but it should be the same as the other 2 houses (now demolished).

TRIO'S HAJJ IN 1897 AND MINANGKABAU GRAND HOUSE DESIGN

Tok Haji Mohd Sharif, Tok Haji Noordin and Haji Khalil went to Makkah to perform the Hajj together and returned in 1897, after which the trio decided to each build a similar and typical style of Malay Minangkabau house.

Tok Haji Mohd Sharif built his big Minangkabau house in Banda Hilir at 262-T Banda Hilir (the house I lived in after I was born).

Tok Haji Noordin built his big Minangkabau house at 302 Ujong Pasir. The house at Ujong Pasir was later dismantled and moved to Duyong. Mahadhir Mohamad (cicit Hj Nordin has details).

Haji Khalil was then the Mufti of Malacca. I don't know the whereabouts of his house. The house could be in Kg Hulu or some other place in Malacca.

Haji Khalil's daughter is Che Mahani bt Haji Khalil. Her marriage to HABHAL appeared in the newspaper on 12 April 1970.

HABHAL married to Mahani bt Haji Khalil as his second wife, after his first wife Nenek Amnah passed away in Singapore.

HABHAL married Mahani bt Haji Khalil at Kg Hulu.

From Zariyah bt Hj Daud:

Zariyah bt Hj Daud was my classmate at MGHS Durian Daun in Malacca in 1972 and 1973. She knows Hajjah Mahani and her family.

Haji Khalil was the first Mufti of Melaka.

Hajjah Mahani bt Haji Khalil was Zariyah's aunt. Zariyah addressed her as Ende.

Che Mahani was HABHAL's relative. They married in 1970. She was HABHAL's second wife. They have no children.

Hajah Mahani has 4 sibs/sisters (not in any order):
  1. Elder sister
  2. Mahani
  3. A sister
  4. Youngest sister

Mahani's elder sister married and lived in Kg Baru, Kuala Lumpur. They were famous for Majid Satay. Their son Abdul Aziz bin Majid was born in 1935. He was more popularly known as Zain Azman, a popular Malay jazz singer in the 1960s and 1970s. Zain studied abroad in the UK, sponsored by his own father, after failing to secure a Government scholarship. He attended the Brighton Technical College in 1956. He returned to Malaysia and was involved with Radio dan Televishen Malaysia (RTM) where he hosted the Zain Azman Show. After a long career (45 years) in singing, Zain Azman succumbed to brain cancer in 2001, aged 66 years. He died at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) on 18 January 2001. He is interred at Tanah Perkuburan Islam Jalan Ampang on Friday after Solat Jumaat. He leaves behind a wife, Junaidah Abdullah (55), and 2 children.

Majid Sate, Kg Baru

Jawatan terakhir arwah Pak Long Kjee, Datuk Mohd Salleh Majid ialah sebagai Chief Inspector of Mines Malaysia! Kini beliau sudahpun arwah.
