INTRODUCTION

Khalil was born in Kg Hulu in 1885 to Malay parents, Haji Husin bin Wahid and Halimah bt Sulaiman @ Che Tom. He was brought up at home till age 4 years. From young, he was adequately prepared for further upbringing, development and Islamic education under the tutelage of Malay educationists in Makkah.

OVERSEAS STUDIES  - LIFE IN MAKKAH 1889-1899

In 1889, as a little boy aged 4 years, Khalil went to Makkah to learn. He studied by halaqah methodology at Masjidil Haram, for approximately 10 years (1889-1899).

At the time in 1889, there were many ulama from Alam Melayu who held halaqahs at the Grand Mosque. They included:
  1. Syeikh Abdullah Fahim,
  2. Syeikh Ahmad bin Muhammad Yunus Lingga,
  4. Syeikh Muhammad Nur al-Fathani (tokoh falak) dan
  5. Syeikh Muhammad Mukhtar bin Atharid Bogor.

One of Khalil's main tutor was Syeikh Umar bin Abdur Rasyid as-Sumbawi. He was from Sembawa in South Sumatra, Indonesia. Sembawa is an agricultural region with a majority (70%) workforce of farmers and animal breeders.

It is storied that Khalil then taught ulama Alam Melayu for 12 years in Makkah (1899-1911).

He lived approximately 22 years in Makkah (1889-1911).

To support himself in Makkah, Khalil helped to carry zamzam water for wages.

LIFE IN MALACCA 1911-1960

Haji Khalil returned to Kg Hulu, Melaka, Tanah Melayu in 1911, aged 26 years.

However, from my brother Sharif's account, Haji Khalil and 2 relatives (Mohd Sharif and Nordin bin Ismail) went for Hajj in 1896. So Haji Khalil was back in Malacca in 1896 and went back to Makkah with the 2 brothers. They then returned in late 1896. He must have gone back and forth another time and this time returned for good.

TRIO'S HAJJ IN 1896 AND MINANGKABAU GRAND HOUSE DESIGN 1897

========
HAJJ 1896
========

Tok Haji Mohd Sharif, Tok Haji Noordin and Haji Khalil went to Makkah to perform the Hajj together and returned late in 1896, after which the trio decided to each build a similar and typical style of Malay Minangkabau house.

================================
MINANGKABAU HOUSE DESIGN 1897
================================

Haji Mohd Sharif made Rumah 262-T Banda Hilir. Haji Noordin made Rumah 302 Banda Hilir. We don't know where Tuan Haji Khalil made his house but it should be the same design as the other 2 houses (262 was demolished circa 2007).
From Abang Sharif:
Tuan Haji Khalil was a friend of Haji Mohd Sharif bin Ismail (Walid's father, Bapak's grandfather). Tuan Haji Khalil, Haji Mohd Sharif and Haji Noordin made the same house like Rumah 262 Banda Hilir.
Tok Moyang Haji Mohd Sharif built his big Minangkabau house in Banda Hilir at 262-T Banda Hilir (the house I lived in after I was born).
Tok Moyang Haji Noordin built his big Minangkabau house at 302 Ujong Pasir. The house at Ujong Pasir was later dismantled and moved to Duyong. Mahadhir Mohamad (cicit Hj Noordin has details).
Bapak said Tok Moyang Haji Noordin built his house at Ujong Pasir. It was a big black house.

Haji Khalil was then the Mufti of Malacca. I don't know the whereabouts of his house. The house could be in Kg Hulu or some other place in Malacca.

DAUGHTER'S MARRIAGE

Haji Khalil's daughter is Che Mahani bt Haji Khalil. Her marriage to HABHAL appeared in the newspaper on 12 April 1970.

HABHAL married Mahani bt Haji Khalil as his second wife, after his first wife Nenek Amnah passed away in Singapore in the late 1960s.
HABHAL visited Banda Hilir in 1963/64 when we lived at 262-T Banda Hilir, before I went to school in Alor Star, Kedah in 1965. He wore a white suit, tie, red fez and white pointed shoes. He was tall and of fair complexion like a Turkish man. He came alone without Nenek Amnah. He came inside Mak Sarah's house where we (all my cousins and I) were seated in the living-room. I saw him bend low to salam people in the house. He was very gracious.

HABHAL married Mahani bt Haji Khalil at Kg Hulu on 12 April 1970. We were living in Kelantan at the time. I was in Standard 6 at Zainab Primary School in Telipot.

MAHANI WAS ENDE

Zariyah bt Hj Daud was my classmate at Malacca Girls' High School (MGHS), Durian Daun in Malacca in 1972 and 1973. She knows Hajjah Mahani and her family.

From Zariyah bt Hj Daud:
Haji Khalil was the first Mufti of Melaka. Hajjah Mahani bt Haji Khalil was Zariyah's aunt. Zariyah addressed her as Ende. There were 4 sisters.

Che Mahani was HABHAL's relative. They married in 1970 as HABHAL's second wife. They have no children. She was probably born circa 1930 (same age as my parents).

MAHANI'S SIBS

Hajah Mahani has 4 sibs/sisters (not in any order):
  1. Elder sister
  2. Mahani
  3. A sister
  4. Youngest sister
  5. Zakaria (only brother) - Pak Abu kenal this youngest brother

==========
MAJID SATE
==========

Mahani's elder sister married and lived in Kg Baru, Kuala Lumpur. They were famous for Majid Satay. Their son Abdul Aziz bin Majid was born in 1935. He was more popularly known as Zain Azman, a popular Malay jazz singer in the 1960s and 1970s. Zain studied abroad in the UK, sponsored by his own father, after failing to secure a Government scholarship. He attended the Brighton Technical College in 1956. He returned to Malaysia and was involved with Radio dan Televishen Malaysia (RTM) where he hosted the Zain Azman Show. After a long career (45 years) in singing, Zain Azman succumbed to brain cancer in 2001, aged 66 years. He died at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) on 18 January 2001. He is interred at Tanah Perkuburan Islam Jalan Ampang on Friday after Solat Jumaat. He leaves behind a wife, Junaidah Abdullah (55), and 2 children.

From Fauziah Samad
http://www.dapurkakjee.com/2011/03/152-satay-dan-kuah-satay.html

Majid Sate, Kg Baru
Jawatan terakhir arwah Pak Long Kjee, Datuk Mohd Salleh Majid ialah sebagai Chief Inspector of Mines Malaysia! Kini beliau sudahpun arwah.
