Conflicting accounts on Haji Bachee's demise:

If Haji Bachee had died as reported in the newspaper on 14 July 1930 (MALACCA MALAY LEADER DEAD. The Singapore Free Press and Mercantile Advertiser, 14 July 1930, Page 10), how come the newspaper (Delegates to Public Meeting Appointed. The Singapore Free Press and Mercantile Advertiser, 12 August 1930, Page 19) published his name as representative for the Association on 12 August 1930, a month after he died?

A public meeting of Asiatic rubber planters was held this afternoon at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce to discuss the advisability of endorsing resolutions that Government be asked to pass legislation providing for the restriction of rubber production, periodical stoppage of tapping or the re-introduction of the Stevenson scheme in a modified form and that Government be asked in conjunction with the Dutch East Indies, Ceylon, and other rubber producing British Possessions to refuse to alienate land for the cultivation of rubber for a period of years.

MATTERS OF MUSLIM INTEREST.
THE LATE HAJI BACHEE.
Friends of Haji Abubakar bin Ahmad, J. P., popularly known as Haji Bachee, of Malacca, will be sorry to hear of his death last Friday night. The late Haji Bachee was a very popular Malacca resident. He was about 68 years old at his death. He had been in indifferent health for some time. It may be remembered that when His Excellency the Governor visited Malacca, the deceased, who was a member of the reception committee, fainted at the landing steps and had to be carried away.
The late Haji Bachee was a man of a retiring disposition. He rarely sought for publicity; though he at all times was at the service of his people. The funeral, which took place on Saturday, was very largely attended. The late Haji Bachee was a member of the committee of the Straits Settlements (Malacca) Association. He leaves eight sons, four daughters and many grandchildren to mourn his loss.

MARINA'S STORY

A lady from Malacca contacted me regarding Hj Bachik. According to her, Hj Bachik of Bukit Cina married 4 wives. Her grandmother was the 4th wife of Hj Bachik.

I asked her to check for the names of Hj Bachik's 4 wives and children. She will ask her uncle.

I don't have her fullname. She could be Marina bt Abdul Manap, a lawyer listed in Malacca.

Children of Haji Bachee:

Haji Bachee had 12 children, 8 boys and 4 girls, as reported in the newspaper at the time of his demise in July 1930. However, they were unnamed.

Searches of old newspapers returned these "bin Bachee" names. They may be/may not be his children.

              Haji Abu Bakar's car 1958:

Bapak related the story of Haji Abu Bakar's car.

Bapak had returned from Kirkby College (according to his mother Nenek Inchek, 26 days after his father passed away).

Bapak became a schoolteacher at the Government English School in Jasin, Melaka (1 Sept 1953).

Bapak married Mak in Nov/Dec 1955, had Abang Sharif in Oct 1956 and Pah in Oct 1957 - just after Merdeka.

In 1958 (the year I was born), Bapak was Guru Pelawat in Malacca. He drove a relative's car and met with an accident - terlanggar a wooden hut/wakaf or selonggok kayu api di tepi jalan. The accident caused damages to the right fender of the car. This car belonged to Haji Abu Bakar.

The car was a Morris Minor with the registration plate M 3601, a Malacca registered plate number. I don't know the colour of the car since the photo is B/W. I had not asked Bapak for the colour of Haji Abu Bakar's car. It is a 2-door saloon, two-tone body - with a dark bottom and a light top, split front windscreen, and tyres with dark hub cap with wide white trim. The grill is 3 by 4, with signal lamps within another grille outline, and headlights above the second grille outline and housed above the fenders. This is much like the 1952 Morris Minor produced in England.

Photo of Haji Abu Bakar's car after the accident in 1958.

This Morris Minor car may not be Haji Bachee's car because Haji Bachee passed away in 1930.

Morris Minor car production only began after WWII, in 1948. The car was assembled in a few countries (England, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand).

              FATHER AND SON

              Father: Salim Bachik

Salim Bachik was born in Malacca in 1936, into a family of artists. He first went to Singapore in 1956 at age 20 years. He signed up with the British Armed Forces (BAF) as a peon (budak pejabat). However, he was talented and moved on into arts and culture shortly after arrival in Singapore. He joined the Tanglin Tinggi Scouts as a comedian and singer in the Scouts choir.

Salim then ventured into Malay-language theatre which was gaining resurgence in Singapore. He was a noted actor-comedian in stage dramas presented by Perkumpulan Seni (Singapore Art Group) in 1960. In 1961, he left Perkumpulan Seni to join Sriwana as chairman of the drama section. In 1967, he acted in the Sriwana production Awal dan Mira at the Victoria Theatre.

In 1968, Salim co-founded Bengkel Drama Kelab Panggung Negara (National Theatre Club Drama Workshop) where he conducted drama workshops for aspiring actors. He acted in the highly acclaimed play, Lela Satria, which was jointly presented by Perkumpulan Seni and Sriwana.

Salim’s talent and stage popularity was comparable to P. Ramlee’s universal appeal in Malay movies. Salim was a significant figure in Singapore Malay theatre. Like P. Ramlee, Salim achieved great acclaim as a television and film personality in the ’60s and ’70s.

He was a popular lead actor in Singapore's TV serial, Pak Awang Temberang. Salim Bachik became a household name and was cast in several films by Shaw Brothers and Cathay-Keris Films such as Gerak Kilat.

A significant figure in Singapore Malay theatre, Salim also achieved great acclaim as a television and film personality in the ’60s and ’70s. He was a popular lead actor in TV Singapura's Pak Awang Temberang series that turned him into a household name, and was cast in several films by Shaw Brothers and Cathay-Keris Films such as Gerak Kilat. Known for his serious work ethic, Salim’s hard work and talent earned him a reputation as a top actor.

When Cathay Keris Films closed in 1973, Salim moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to work as an acting coach with Television Malaysia, imparting his passion for acting to young actors, and as a broadcast assistant with Radio Malaysia.

In February 1977, Salim passed away at the age of 41. His sudden death due to heart ailments in the prime of his acting career came as a shock to his peers in Malay theatre and film. Salim is survived by his son Harun.

              Son: Harun Salim Bachik

Harun Salim Bachik is a well-known television and film actor in Malaysia.

This graveyard is long and is bordered on one side by the masjid, another side by a row of low houses, on a third side by Jalan Hang Li Po, which also has an entrance gate and green metal label, a fourth side by houses, and a fifth side by the Emperor Hotel.

              Graveyard adjoining the masjid.

This long giant drum (beduk) is similar to the one at Masjid Banda Hilir (1820-1960s).

              Interview

According to an interview with Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid (1921-2013), Kg Baru, KL, in May 2007, Kg Baru was set up to break up the Chinese monopoly over KL. Malay people were brought from Melaka to Kg Baru, KL, under the directive of Police Chief, Henry Syers. Thus, Kg Baru had sub-villages with Melaka names, and the residents have roots in Melaka. Datuk Nengkong was a Chinese in Melaka, possibly a Baba.

One of the early Malay doctors who served at the Special Malay Hospital in Kg Baru was Dr Abdul Latiff bin Abdul Razak, the first Malay doctor of Bugis descent. Tan Sri (then a small boy) recalled having been treated by Dr Abdul Latiff at the Special Malay Hospital in Kg Baru.

Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid was born on 15 November 1921 in Kg Baru, KL. He passed away on 24 March 2013 and is interned at the royal graves at Makam Diraja in Shah Alam.

Dr Abdul Latiff bin Abdul Razak was born in 1889 in Pasir Penambang, Kuala Selangor, Selangor. He passed away in 1956.

The biographies of these 2 doctors above are in my book, Biography of the Early Malay Doctors 1900-1957 Malaya and Singapore (Xlibris, 2012). Tan Sri's autobiography is An Old Man Remembers (2006).

              History of Kg Baru, KL
              Source

Kg Baru was established in KL in 1899. It was an Agricultural Settlement established under Section 3(1) The Malay Agricultural Settlement (Kuala Lumpur) Rules 1950. The Settlement was initially 89 hectares. The Malay Agricultural Settlement (MAS) is monitored by the MAS Board.#

According to Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid bin Ismail, there are many villages within Kg Baru. There are many Malay houses, Sekolah Kg Baru, Masjid Kg Baru, and a Special Malay Hospital in Kg Baru.

              Introduction

Mohd Amin was said to be the first person to have build a house in Kg Baru when it was first established in 1899. He was a trusted man whom the British believed could look after the largely Javanese Malay community which eventually settled here. They were largely farmers, and they grew mainly vegetables to supply the nearby market, Pasar Chow Kit. Fresh fish was supplied from Port Swettenham (now Port Klang).

Mohd Amin was the adopted son of a Javanese Malay man, Hassan Long bin Datuk Nengkong.

From family accounts, Mohd Amin was founder of Kg Baru in KL. He built the first house in Kg Baru, KL. His plot of land was near the old initial Kelab Sultan Suleiman wooden building.

In Kg Baru, KL, Mohd Amin worked as a market supervisor (penguasa pasar) at Pasar Chow Kit in Kuala Lumpur. Thus, he was called Mat Amin Pasar. He obtained free supply of fish and vegetables from the stall owners.

              Tanah Wakaf

Mat Amin Pasar also donated land for building Masjid Kg Baru, but it was wealthy businessman Haji Bachik of Bukit China in Malacca who funded the building of the masjid. See separate post on Hj Abu Bakar bin Ahmad @ Haji Bachik.

              Marriages

From various accounts of his grandchildren and grandson-in-law (Pak Cik Hassan), we know that Mohd Amin Pasar had 4 wives.
              1. First wife: Che' Pah; Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar married Che' Pah circa 1895/6. She had an only son named Abu Hassan.
              2. Second wife: Sekmah; Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar married Sekmah circa 1899/1900. She had 8 children. She is the mother of Nenek Inchek. She died circa 1914 when Nenek Inchek was 7 years old (Darjah 1).
              3. Third wife: Anjah bt Nae'mat; Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar married Anjah bt Nae'mat (after Sekmah died) circa 1914/5. She had 8 children. She is the mother of Bik Rama. Anjah and Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid's father, Ismail bin Nae'mat, are siblings. Enjah bt Mohd Ariff (Tan Sri's mother) is Anjah's niece.
              4. Fourth wife: Hasnah (she was known as Nenek Senah); Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar married Hasnah circa 1933/4. She was childless with Mohd Amin, but she had children from a previous marriage.
              Total # of children: 17

Altogether, Mat Amin Pasar had 17 children from 3 of his 4 wives; a fourth wife was barren with Mohd Amin, but had children from her previous marriage.

Nenek Inche had 17 siblings from 3 mothers; a fourth mother was barren with Mohd Amin, but had children from her previous marriage.

              =======000========000======

              1. BAIZURA @ SHARIFAH BANOM @ BAINUN
              (Che' Pah)

              First wife: Che' Pah.
Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar married Che' Pah circa 1895/6.
She had an only son named Abu Hassan bin Mohd Amin (b.1897/8).
              What was her full name?
              Was she Banom?
              Was she Sharifah Bainun?
              Was she Baizura?

If Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar married Sekmah (second wife) circa 1899/1900, then he could have married Che' Pah (first wife) before that, maybe circa 1895/6. Maybe she died circa 1897/8, leaving behind an only son. So Mat Amin Pasar then married Sekmah. So Abu Hassan bin Mohd Amin could have been born in 1897/8.

Most Malay girls in Malaya marry at age 12 (going on 13) once they have their first menses (menarche). So Che' Pah was 12/13 circa 1883/4.

Most Malay lads in Malaya marry at age 21-25 once they have secured a job. So Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar married Che' Pah circa 1895/6 when he was 21-25 years old. This means that Mat Amin Pasar was a working man by 1895/6 when he first married Che' Pah.

Based on his estimated year of marriage to Che' Pah, Mohd Amin Pasar's DOB is estimated to be between 1870-1874. His record with details of his birth date should be in the British registration record of Births and Deaths for 1870-1874. Boleh try pergi check this.

              2. SEKMAH

              Second wife: Sekmah
Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar married Sekmah circa 1899/1900.
              She had 5+3 children = 8 children.
All her children have passed away.
She is the mother of Nenek Inchek.
She died circa 1914 when Nenek Inchek was 7 years old (Darjah 1).

              Children: 8
              1. Datuk Mohd Noor bin Mohd Amin (b.1900/1-d.1955)*****
              2. Aminah bt Mohd Amin @ Mak Ngah (b.1902/3)
              3. Muhamad Saleh @ Tok Alang (b.1904/5) of Kg Baru in KL. He is the father of Mak Cik Jamilah; he is abang Nenek Inchek
              4. Aishah bt Mohd Amin (b.1906/7-d.1978) @ Esah @ Bik Esah @ Inchek @ Nenek Inchek. I called her Nenek Inchek. Her mother died when she was 7 years old. She married at age 12 (turning 13), to Mohd Yusope bin Hj Mohd Sharif of Banda Hilir @ Bapak punya Walid @ my Jaddi @ my datuk sebelah Bapak
              5. Nyonya bt Mohd Amin (b.1908/9)*
              6. Jamaliah bt Mohd Amin (b.1910/11) ***
              7. Zawiyah bt Mohd Amin (b.1912/13)****
              8. Ismail bin Mohd Amin @ Pak Busu Mail (b.1914)**
*Nyonya bt Mohd Amin is different from Nyonya Nengkong. See Coco.

**Ismail bin Mohd Amin @ Pak Busu Mail was born before his mother Sekma died in 1914, when Nenek Inche was in Standard 1 (aged 7).

***Jamaliah bt Mohd Amin - her DOB is estimated. She is adik Nenek Inche. She died young. Her name was added on Geni.com by Sharif, my eldest brother.

****Zawiyah bt Mohd Amin - her DOB is estimated.

*****Datuk Mohd Noor bin Mohd Amin - his DOB is estimated based on approx. 2 years subtracted for each child before Nenek Inche. His actual birth date is unknown.

If Datuk Mohd Noor bin Mohd Amin is the eldest child of Sekmah, and was born in 1900/1, then his father Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar married Sekmah in 1899/1900.

              3. ANJAH BT NAE'MAT

Third wife: Anjah bt Nae'mat (sister of Ismail bin Nae'mat, father of Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid bin Ismail @ Coco @ Koko). Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar married Anjah bt Nae'mat (after Sekmah died) circa 1914/5. She had 8 children with Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar

Mat Amin Pasar had 8 children with Anjah. All are deceased.
              2. Ali bin Mohd Amin @ Tok Ali (b.1918/9)berkahwin dengan Rahmah bt Ismail. Mereka tinggal di Gombak.
              3. Zainab bt Mohd Amin @ Bik Jenab (b.1920/1)* berkahwin dengan Mohd Nasir. Mereka tinggal di Singapura. Nasir kerja dengan Utusan di Singapura. Setelah suaminya meninggal, Bik Jenab kembali menetap di Kg Baru, KL. Akhir sekali Bik Jenab tinggal bersama keluarga anak sulungnya (Mohd Shapri) di Ipoh, Perak.
              4. Salihah bt Mohd Amin @ Bik Leha (b.1922/3)* berkahwin dengan Ahmad bin Dom. Mereka menetap di Petaling Jaya.
              5. Enson bt Mohd Amin @ Bik Enson (b.1924/5)* berkahwin dengan Abdul Ghani bin Khamis. Mereka menetap di Kajang. Bik Enson meninggal di Kajang.
              6. Hendon bt Mohd Amin @ Bik Endon (b.1926/7)* berkahwin dengan Tok Ali (Information Officer/Pegawai Penerangan). Mereka tinggal di Jalan Fajar, Alor Star, Kedah
              7. Rahmah bt Mohd Amin @ Bik Rahmah/Bik Ama (b.1928/9) di Kajang. Either her husband/son was the Ambassador to Japan.
              8. Idris bin Mohd Amin @ Tok Busu (b.1930/1)* berkahwin dengan Zainab (Nenek Busu) dari Terengganu. Mereka menetap di Jengka. Tok Busu sudah meninggal.
*All birth dates of Anjah's children are estimated. There is no record of their actual birth dates.

Maybe Anjah died a few years after giving birth to Idris @ Tok Busu and Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar remarried in 1933/4.

Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar married Hasnah circa 1933/4, but he soon died between 1932 and 1942 and aged about 66, and widowed Hasnah took little boy Idris and went to live with Tok Rashid's family in Serdang.

In Serdang, Tok Rashid and Mohd Yusope bin Hj Mohd Sharif (my paternal grandfather) were colleagues and they were good friends with Idris bin Mohd Amin @ Tok Busu, who had little education before the Japanese war.

Mohd Yusope bin Hj Mohd Sharif then married Aishah bt Mohd Amin @ Bik Esah of Kg Baru. They went to live at Jalan Imbi, KL. My father (Abdul Rashid) was born at home in Jalan Imbi, KL. The family moved to Banda Hilir, Melaka during the Japanese war when KL was bombed, and remained in Malacca in the post-war till I was born.

Meanwhile, Tok Rashid and Idris bin Mohd Amin @ Tok Busu went to work in Bukit Besi in Terengganu during the Japanese war. They extracted iron ore for export to Japan. That was when Idris bin Mohd Amin @ Tok Busu met Zainab @ Nenek Busu and they married. He worked as a welder (pengimpal). They then moved to Jengka Pusat when the FELDA opened there. Can try and obtain stories of Tok Busu from Nenek Busu and the 4 children.

              4. HASNAH

              Fourth wife: Hasnah (she was known as Nenek Senah);
She was childless with Mohd Amin, but she had children from a previous marriage. Mohd Amin @ Mat Amin Pasar married Hasnah circa 1933/4.

              DATOK NENGKONG

Datok Nengkong married and had 5 children:
              1. Mohd Ariff Long of Kg Baru
              2. Che Long
              3. Hassan Long
              4. Bik Empah Long
              5. Abu Long
Abu Long married Hjh Mai bt Tahir.

Mohd Ariff Long lived in Kg Baru, KL. His house was at the intersection of Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Raja Abdullah.
Mohd Ariff Long married Nyonya Nengkong and had 2 daughters:
              1. Enjah bt Mohd Ariff Long
              2. Maimunah bt Mohd Ariff Long
Maimunah bt Mohd Ariff Long married Hj Abu Hj Taib.

Enjah's ancestors were from Alor Gajah and Batu Berendam in Melaka. Datok Nengkong was a Chinese man. Mohd Ariff Long was a gharry driver who drove a horse-driven carriage. A gharry is equivalent to today's taxi.

Coco's maternal grandmother (wife of Mohd Ariff Long) is Nyonya Nengkong, whom he called Nyonya.

Coco's maternal grandaunt is Bik Empah Long (sister of Mohd Ariff Long).

Coco's mother, Enjah, was born in the area around Masjid India. The family later lived in Kg Ujong Pasir within Kg Baru, KL. She was a Quran teacher. She was called Bik Enjah or Nenek Enjah. She was Moyang Enjah to me. I met her when she and my father's aunts came to visit us at 56 Jalan Day, Alor Star, Kedah, between 1964 and 1967.

Coco's maternal granduncle, Hassan Long @ Wak Hassan, worked as a draughtsman in the Sanitary Board, Kuala Lumpur (SBKL), equivalent to today's Majlis Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (MBKL).
Wak Hassan married Embok and had 4 children:
              1. Kak Entom
              2. Abang Aziz
              3. Abang 'Amid*
              4. Latif
*Abang 'Amid could be Normah's father. She is Normah bt Abdul Hamid. She lives in Kelantan. She said her relatives (orang Kg Baru, KL) visited her in Kelantan when a wedding was to be held in KL (maybe they came to inform and/invited her). Refer to post on Normah bt Abdul Hamid.

Enjah bt Mohd Ariff Long married Ismail bin Nae'mat and had 9 children (see below). Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid bin Ismail @ Coco, was born in his grandfather's house (Mohd Ariff Long) on 15 November 1921. Ismail bin Nae'mat worked in the FMS railway repair yard at Sentul.

              Catatan Sejarah Keretapi Tanah Melayu

According to Tan Sri Dr Abdul Majid bin Ismail, an aunt whom he called Mak, was like a mother to him. She made barut bayi. Could this aunt be Maimunah, sister of Enjah? His real mother was Enjah bt Mohd Ariff, a Quran teacher in Kg Baru, and he hardly met her.

Ismail bin Nae'mat's ancestors were from Umbai and Ujong Pasir in Melaka.

Coco's paternal grandfather is Nae'mat, whom he called Datok Naemat. Nae'mat served under Henry Syers as a police constable in the Selangor Police Contingent. Henry Syers was responsible for selecting and re-locating Melaka Javanese Malays to Kg Baru, KL. They were farmers, and farmed vegetables to supply the nearby market, at Chow Kit.

              ENJAH BT MOHD ARIFF
              (Nya)

              Name: Enjah bt Mohd Ariff
Call name: Nenek Enjah, Nek Enjah, Bik Enjah
              DOB:
              Deceased:

              Relationship:
Enjah bt Mohd Ariff is the niece of Anjah bt Nae'mat. Anjah bt Nae'mat is the aunt of Enjah bt Mohd Ariff. Anjah bt Nae'mat died circa 1920. Enjah bt Mohd Ariff married circa 1920.

I met Nenek Enjah twice. Some grandaunts and aunts came to visit us at 56 Jalan Day in Alor Star, Kedah btween 1964 and 1967. That was the first time I heard her name. She was with the other ladies, so I could not figure out which one was her. I remember trying to find out which one was Nenek Enjah.

Then my family and I visited a big wooden house with light green interior and many closed windows in KL. I don't know whose house it was but it was a beautiful Malay wooden home on stilts, with light green interior. We sat in the big brightly-lit living-room with closed windows on three walls. There were intricate carvings above the windows, which were airholes for ventilation. Then I recognised Nenek Enjah as I was a bigger girl. We talked about Rashidah (anak Mak Nya) becoming anak angkat Bik Jenab. I don't remember seeing Rashidah at this house and I never met Rashidah as a child.

              Marriage:
Ismail bin Nae'mat (Baba) married Enjah bt Mohamed Ariff (Nyacirca 1920 and had 12 children. However, 3 died young (Razak, Osman and Alijah) and only 9 survived to adulthood and old age:

              3. Alijah bt Ismail was adopted by Wak Tompang and wife Wak Putih. She married but died at age 18/19, in the post-war (c.1947/48).
              4. Latifah bt Ismail @ Alang (b.1930)
              5. Saliah bt Ismail @ Fatma Abu (b.1931) was adopted by Abu Chenteng @ Tok Busu and wife 'Nek BusuTok Busu was an officer in the Customs Department in Malacca. Cikgu/Gurubesar Fatma's family lived in Kg Morten, Melaka.

              NORMAH BT ABDUL HAMID
              (Kak Norma-Abang Hadi)

I don't know where exactly Kak Normah bt Abdul Hamid belongs to in the family tree.
She knows Bik Esah (my Nenek Inchek @ Aishah bt Mohd Amin). She said they are closely related, but how? Her father is Abdul Hamid bin Hassan Long (Coco alluded to him as Abang 'Amid).
Refer to post on Normah bt Abdul Hamid.
