Satay Anika, the Malaysian satay restaurant chain, celebrates the official opening of its first Singapore outlet at Centrepoint tomorrow evening.
The opening will be inaugurated by the Malaysian High Commissioner to Singapore, Tan Sri Dato Syed Ahmad Shahabudin.
The Singapore restaurant is the first overseas outlet of Satay Anika, and also the first all-satay restaurant of its kind to open here.
Since it opened to the public last October, it has consistently drawn large crowds.
The local operation is managed by Majid Satay Anika (S) Pte Ltd, a joint-venture between Majid Satay Sdn Bhd and local businessman N S (Naffi) Aurora.
The company is encouraged by its initial success to look after further expansion in this market. Two more outlets are earmarked to be opened by the end of next year.
Satay Anika's popularity is preceded by that of the famous "Majid Satay" of Campbell Road, Kuala Lumpur. Majid started the business in the early twenties.
In 1980, his sons pioneered the concept of Satay Anika and laid the beginnings of a successful, home-grown fast-food restaurant chain.
Today, although the concept is modernised and the satay prepared with the help of automatic machines, the traditional touch is not lost. The satay is still grilled by hands over charcoal embers.
This, together with the gravy made from Majid's 60-year-old recipe, accounts for Satay Anika's continued popularity.
